MORAVIAN MISSIONARIES.

We wish to call the attention of our readers to an appeal to the benevolent in behalf of the Moravian Missionaries, which is contained in an advertisement inserted in our last page.

In a late number of the GAZETTE, we gave an account of the unparalleled distress to which the Moravians have been exposed.

We hope this appeal to British benevolence will not be in vain.

FIRE.

On the night of Tuesday last, the Bobbin-Mill and Dwelling-House belonging to MR. WALKER, of Stocks, near this town, were unfortunately destroyed by fire.  The family escaped with some difficulty.  We have not heard how the fire originated.

HYDROPHOBIA.

About seven weeks ago, MR. JOSEPH JACKSON, landlord of the Wheat Sheaf Inn, Ulverston, was severely bitten in one of his legs by a dog, which was confined in his stable, belonging to some itinerent potters, who were in the habit of frequenting his house.
The owner was informed of the circumstance, and went to the stable, when the dog made an attempt to bite him also, but only slightly scratched his hand.
It was deemed prudent immediately to destroy the dog; and, as far as possible to prevent the dreadful consequences which were apprehended; the "Ormskirk medicine" was administered to both MR. JACKSON and the owner of the dog.  The wound on MR. J'S leg gradually healed, and the fears it had created began to subside;  but on Monday last he was taken very ill, and on medical aid being procured, his case was pronounced to be that of Hydrophobia  !
The poor man felt the same awful conviction, and submitted to  his fate with great firmness of mind.  His agonies increased with the malady till three o'clock Wednesday morning, when his spirit returned to him who gave it !
By this melancholy event, four helpless children have become orphans;  and a virtuous wife, a hapless widow !

The new fortnight Cattle Show, as advertised in our paper last week, at Eamont Bridge, near Penrith, commenced on Monday last, when a good show of stock was in the market, and the same very numerously attended by several extensive and respectable dealers, who made great purchases.  This fair is likely to continue a convenient market for both buyers and sellers of all kinds of cattle.

RABBIT.

The following is an instance of the intense frost of last week:  On Tuesday morning se'nnight, a passenger in one of the carriers carts proceeding from Maryport to Whitehaven, perceived something lying near the road, (crossing the Rabbit Warren between Maryport and Workington) which at first was mistaken for a stone, till it appeared to move.
On examination, it was found to be a rabbit, lying upon its side;  alive, but actually so frozen to the ground, that a part of its fur was left upon the spot, before the little animal could be set upon its legs again.

SWORD FISH. - The "Wilkinson",  BELL  of Whitehaven, on her passage from Buenos Ayres, was pierced in the bottom, through copper and plank, by a fish supposed to be of the sword or unicorn species:  in attempting to take it, about one half broke away, and the other remained in the ship.
