Dear Friends,
I hope this e-mail finds you well. I am writing because even though the organization I work for, Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC), is winning victories on local and national campaigns left and right, we are going through some hard financial times. I am asking you to take this opportunity to help us continue fighting for affordable housing, health care, and homeless youth by donating just $20. This week, your contribution will be matched, so your $20 would turn into $40 like magic. The donation website is
here.
A few very recent housing victories and exciting examples of what you would be supporting:
*Low-income tenants working with LAC initiated and saw through a national campaign to make sure that people living in at-risk HUD housing are protected from severe rent increases that would kick them out on the street. Considering the ugly federal spending debate, our chances for winning were slim, but because of all the good organizing that we did, WE WON $10 million in funding to protect these families!
*Last week, the landlord of one of the SRO hotels in the neighborhood tried to illegally kick hundreds of people out -- people with physical and mental disabilities with nowhere else to go. After LAC intervention, the landlord has laid off. We are now working on an ordinance that would preserve SROs in Chicago as affordable housing, which would put SRO conversion to an end.
*150 families and low-income senior citizens in Lincoln Park will not have to worry about being homeless this holiday or for the next 5 years because they organized. The landlord just signed a 5-year contract with the government, which he would not have done without the work that the tenants did.
We want to continue the work of organizing people who have the will, the power, the energy, and the guts to fight on their own behalf for their right to housing, health care, and safety. I feel really lucky that I get to do this work, and it is because of generous people like you that I get to do it!
Thank you so much for your support,
Mary
