Hello gendarmes,

Gendarme installers (win32, zipped-binaries) for 2.8 are finally
available on ohloh.net [1]. A big thanks to Antoine who found the
issue wrt the wix project producing setup incapable of detecting .NET
3.5 properly!

You might have noticed that Google is scaling down its support for
Google Groups. I'm working on a solution to depend less on it (e.g.
pre-releases) and on ohloh.net - since both had their share of issues
last year. Sadly I was not able to complete this for 2.8.

The next version of Gendarme (like Mono) will be 2.10 (then 2.12...)
until we hit the 3.0. This means shorter periods between releases,
which I believe will be a good thing, even if it makes it harder to
plan specific features for each release :-)

In any case, at some (pre-3.0) point Gendarme will:
* switch to Cecil/Light which _may_ break the API (since we expose
some Cecil types)
* switch to .NET 4.0 / VS.NET 2010, which could also affect the API

The gendarme download page on ohloh is empty....

Where can we find Gendarme 2.8?

Hello Mark,

Thanks for letting me know. I've emailed ohloh about the situation. If
this is not resolved quickly I'll try to get the binaries on the main
mono download site.

Thanks
Sebastien

p.s. I'm (slowly) working on a better solution but I do not think this
will be ready before gendarme 3.0.

Hello again,

So it looks like I missed an important memo - ohloh downloads were
discontinued :(

My plan B is not ready but you can download the 2.8 (win32 or
binaries) from
https://github.com/spouliot/gendarme/downloads

Hello Sebastien,

A source control system is not the most suitable place to distribute binaries, at the end is a source control system not a software distribution platform.

Look at Git Hub terms of service [1]:

"If your bandwidth usage significantly exceeds the average bandwidth usage (as determined solely by GitHub) of other GitHub customers, we reserve the right to immediately disable your account or throttle your file hosting until you can reduce your bandwidth consumption."

If for any reason Gendarme for Windows get referenced in a major Microsoft .Net development site (or MSDN) and people starts to download it, you may hit this case quickly.

I do not know if you have ever used SourceForge (http://www.sf.net) or similar Forge services. You can consider setting up there a Gendarme project and use the file are to distribute binaries. They have all projects copied over different mirrors and they handle large traffic well. I have used for severa projects with very good result.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Jordi,

Hi Sebastien.

CodePlex might be a good place to host the Gendarme downloads - there's no compulsion to use ALL their facilities for a project (there are heaps that use CodePlex for docs & downloads, and github for source, for example).

Plus, CodePlex is one place that Windows based .NET developers tend to go looking for tools, so you might gain increased visibility.

Just a thought,
Bevan
