Feed Errors

I'm just installing Gelato for the first time. I'm impressed.
Tumblog concept is just right for me, I really like Tumblr but I'm not
wild about data silos even with APIs. I'm really hoping to get Gelato
going on my site. Right now I've got everything up and running except
feed import.

Regardless of feed type I give it ( RSS / Atom / selecting tumblr or
twitter from the list ) I always Error updating http://whatever.xyz/feed.

I've tried both an automatic and a manual install both locally and on
a live server - all four times, same error.

Are there known gotchas around feed import? Could someone point me in
the right direction, even if it's just how to get Gelato into debug
mode to get more than $feed['error'] = 1 out of it?

Setting uploads/CACHE permissions to 777 helped, but the Twitter
import still didn't work properly for me - it would import recent
posts once then never update. However, feeding it RSS with a single
post is working so far e.g. http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/username.rss?count=1

Thanks for the suggestions but still no luck.

chmod 777 and playing with all sorts of rss / atom feeds still just
gives me errors.

At this point I guess I'm really just looking for the debug mode
switch. Does gelato have such a thing?
