Winamp plays MPEG Layer 2 (MP2) and Layer 3 (MP3) audio streams and combines extensive functionality with an intuitive interface. Winamp has a full-featured playlist editor and a 10-band graphic equalizer with user-definable presets that can automatically load specific files.
The first major update of Winamp was Winamp3. It had video support, new skinning system, and a redesign of the plug-in system. Unfortunately, it was poorly received and widely criticized. To fix this embarrassment, Nullsoft decided to integrate Winamp3 skin and script support into the Winamp 2.x platform. Thus, Winamp 2 plus Winamp3 equals Winamp5 (released December 16, 2003). Upon release of Winamp5, Winamp3 was spun off as the Wasabi.player, an open-source equivalent to Nullsoft\\\'s Winamp. Wasabi is a mostly open-source (zlib-licensed), cross-platform application framework and skinnable GUI toolkit, developed by Nullsoft.
New features in Winamp 5.0 include support for classic Winamp 1.x/2.x/2.9x skins and Winamp 3 (\\\"Modern\\\") skins, vastly more powerful media library, CD ripping support (AAC@2x in free version, MP3 at unlimited speeds in pro), CD burning support (limited to 2x in free version), advanced title formatting logic for file types that support it, huge AVS updates, support for playback of AAC and VP6 in NSV files/streams, global hotkey support, new Signal Processing Studio DSP plug-in, options to disable plugin exception handling for developers, new Winamp icon, added XP Manifest.xml to winamp.exe, made agent icon use configured winamp system tray icon, optimized winamp\\\'s load titles on demand logic, made faster, made winamp\\\'s internal submenu management more reliable, added skin font override preferences, and added spacebar shows current playlist item in playlist editor.

Pros: Free and very simple to use, fast compression and decompression of files.
Cons: Doesn
OP: I installed newest winamp version 5.8 build 3660 (x86) and it has lag way too often (imo there should be NO lag at all!). It's awful with that lag to have the music interrupted for half a second now and then. So I installed an old version 2.xx and it had no lag. But then read that it is from 2000, dont know if there would be security risks of using such an old program?
If anyone have knowledge of the latest version that has no lag it would be appreciated. Otherwise im going to start downloading older versions from www.oldversion.com/windows/winamp/ testing them out until I find the newest one that does not lag the tracks.
This is a sister site of winampplugins.co.uk (previously nunzioweb.com/daz / daz.ne1.net) which albeit a bit broken & needing some updating shows off a lot of the plug-ins that I created & worked on over the years going all the way back to 2003.
I have over 20 years experience making Winamp plug-ins as well as having worked on Winamp natively on / off since 2007 until the last AOL release. I'm now hoping to do some of the things I used to do for Winamp to try to get back the feeling of fun from getting new build updates that's sadly missing from a lot of software nowadays (aka coding without the corporate BS). I also worked on SHOUTcast from late 2010 until mid-September 2015.
The parent company for Winamp has been split between two projects for the past few years: updates for the classic Windows player, and a completely new service with the same name. The initial version of the service is now live at player.winamp.com, which works on both desktop and mobile browsers. Full mobile apps for iPhone and Android are expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2023, "based on the legacy desktop version," according to a press release.
Ah, I was mistaken - You can play it through winamp, but all the methods are pretty hacky, and are mostly just either loading files that spotify downloads for its app, or running a shoutcast server locally and pointing winamp at it.
all i have ever known has been winamp i got a new laptop for Christmas this year it runs windows 11 and i cannot get my winamp to work correctly on windows 11 it will NOT allow me to create a play list no matter what i try if any one has the answer on how to fix this problem i would appreciate the help
winamp version 0.8.13 for macos with full support for catalina work perfectly on mojave, but on catalina it wont start, i get an error and when i try to repeat that i get same message again and again... is there anything i can do? because it's annoying, on my imac it works fine and on macbook i have to use some stupid apps that wont let me use the app if i don;t pay.....
Just use old versions of winamp. Web base, sigh. I already use mixcloud and soundcloud which is the best. They need to ditch this and quick and give us a desktop app. Seems like everything has changed and changing for the worse. Why ruined something if it was great already?
The first idea was to add another OLED screen, but it was a bad idea, because this kind of OLED screen are expensive and there is not a big resolution, they can only show 256 x 64 pixels, or about 8 - 10 character lines...
But we came with a better idea: Use the main screen for showing the playlist eventually, but navigating around the songs would be tedious...
Then, we had the main idea: Airamp has a web server inside, wich can serve a webapp to a smartphone...
So why not recreate a winamp style skin for the frontend, where you can use a more usefull playlist viewer and use to choose songs...
All the audio data is maintained on Airamp freeing space on the smart phone but keeping the remote control functions on cellphone
You know what WinAmp is, right? It's the most comprehensive music player I've ever seen, playing anything from mp3s and midis to MODs and ULTs. You can customise your copy with any of the downloadable skins, or make your own, which is really quite easy. You can group all your songs in playlists, fiddle with the graphic equaliser, and get a load of great special effects to play in time with your newest mp3 file. Brilliant, in every way.
