Hi Ohio Techy Friends!

Many of my teachers today received a message from YouTube stating: Starting in the coming weeks: Because your school admin has marked you as under 18 years old, you’ll see a new, limited version of YouTube designed for schools when you use your school account. This means you won’t be able to do things like comment, live chat, or receive most notifications. You also won’t be able to create YouTube videos and may not be able to watch certain videos.

Anyone know how to get this changed? Obviously, we are fine with studetns having certain permissions removed, but many of our teachers utilize their channels in class and with students.

Thanks,
Leah

Here's a message from a colleague that was on our listserv for techcoords - it corrects it, but Eric was ice enough to include a video for us. :)

Folks,

Sorry for the scary header, but this one said he could potentially cause you a world of pain in an already busy start to your school year,
In short the link below will log you into your Google admin console after you put in your credentials and you'll see a page to adjust the age restrictions within Google.  It doesn't seem like a big deal, however by default this setting will inadvertently disabled YouTube channels Google Earth maps and blogger and a few other Google settings for everybody in your domain if you don't take action.

Ensure a switch is flipped on September 1st telling Google that everyone in your domain is under the age of 18, you need to specify that your staff and any service accounts that utilize any of the services listed above have this setting enabled.

Feel free to watch the quick loom video below, and hopefully you saw this email in the nick of time.

Here’s the Google Admin Help page: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10651918

Google will automatically set all K-12 schools’ users (my understanding is teachers included) to “under 18”, but you can set it by OU with the directions on that page.

As long as you are not having students create videos, upload videos, create their own playlist... you should be fine.  Teacher-generated playlists and uploaded/shared videos should be fine.  It looks like Youtube is just limiting the under 18 yr olds to some of the Youtube creation, commenting parts of Youtube.

Am I right from reading that email that a teacher's school YouTube channels will be hidden?  Does this cause them to lose their content if they do not transfer it to a personal account?  I know this is going to be an issue for some if so.

Here’s what they say about it – thought it’s unclear what happens to the content. I would hope if a teacher’s YouTube channel is hidden, then the account is designated as over 18, all of the content reappears, but I can’t find any confirmation on that.

Here’s the list of what is blocked for users designated as under 18:
