I spoke with an instructional coach from a nearby district who pays for the premium ChatGPT out of his own pocket and he shared with me how he has used the CustomGPT feature to create a GPT called "8th grade math instructional coach." He fed it information about 8th grade math PSSA released items and several different instructional strategy websites, including John Hattie, and we were pleased with the results it was able to produce when we asked for instructional strategies for this content area specifically.

Now my interest is piqued, and I would like to know....
1. Has anyone in this group attempted something similar in creating a customGPT and how did it work for you? What limitations does it seem to have?

2. I'm waiting to hear back from support at OpenAI but who knows how long that will take. I would like to know if they will accept purchase orders if my district will spring for a ChatGPT subscription rather than using credit card payments (they don't love doing that). Has anyone's district purchased ChatGPT for staff, and if so how are you using it/who are you using it with?

As I'm sure you know, Pennsylvania is one of the last states to adopt new science standards that are similar to NGSS but PA is calling STEELS standards. I'd love to create a custom GPT to act as a science instructional coach that can help provide me with solid lessons and pedagogy to help support my science teachers as they transition to the new standards and new ways of teaching.

What are your thoughts about all of this? If this experiment works well, maybe I will someday be working myself out of a job haha....

Hi Hannah - sorry, I don't have any experience with the purchase part of your question and I haven't yet created one myself.  But, I tucked away these two resources for if/when the time comes that I want to create my own and thought that you might find them helpful when you start to build your own GPT.

Take care,

Wow I just tried it and created on for 4th grade math!!!  I have the paid version to create it.  But anyone you share it with has to have the paid version to use it.  My question though is this.  However OpenAI is not for students under the age of 18. So technically only teachers could use it.

Hi Judy - true what you said about anyone on the user-side wanting to access your custom GPT that you created needing a pro account as well.

I came across these two https://schoolai.com & https://mizou.com options recently but haven't played with them yet much.  Linked here is my quick test run with SchoolAI to create a 7th grade life science chatbot that you can test out yourself.

They let you create your own chatbot that students can access and you don't need to create student accounts.

Judy - you're right about needing the paid version to access a customGPT, so that's definitely a limitation for me. My workaround would be to create the customGPT under an account that I'd share with my teachers so they can log in and access it anytime. I don't know how well that would work in practicality, but before I even attempt this I need to see if I'd have buy-in from my people. That's what I'm checking on now....

Brad - thanks for all of the links. I have looked at Mizou and it seems okay but my impression of it was that it's a chatbot you design for classroom use. I was thinking of something more for teacher use only, but I appreciate all of the resources! If my teachers seem excited about this option of a virtual instructional science coach, I'll look further and update this thread with my findings as I go :)
