2. CALR Linguistics Journal

Editor-in-Chief Hayat Al-Khatib, Professor of Applied Linguistics Arab Open University – Lebanon - hkh...@aou.edu.lb

Language controversies have been the focus of much debate in recent

studies (Lobin, 2021; Jabeen, Chandio & Qasim, 2020; Progovac, 2019).

Bouchard (2018) proposes that controversies in applied linguistics are

the result of clashes between different theoretical approaches.

Research-based debates on the nature of language acquisition, the

extent and influence of L1 on L2, the relationship between language

and thought, the existence of universal grammar, the role of language

in society and culture, and the accuracy of machine translation, are

but a few examples. Widely debated topics are perceived to attract

more arguments, possible theories and innovative interpretations.

The Centre for Applied Linguistics Research (CALR) at the Arab Open

University, invites linguists and researchers to probe into an area of

language controversy in an attempt to find threads within and across

disciplines that can clarify the area under investigation and

ultimately present studies that can contribute to new forms of

knowledge. Researchers are invited to present working papers, research

articles and case studies on:

•       Controversies over the nature of language acquisition

•       Bilingual/multilingual policies and practice

•       Any evidence on the first language affecting second language

proficiency

•       The relationship between language and thought

•       Language, media texts and interpretation

•       The existence of universal grammar

•       The role of language in society and culture

•       Accuracy in machine translation

•       Other language related controversies

##4. Revista Organon 78, Estudos em morfofonologia

Organizadores: Luiz Carlos Schwindt (UFRGS), Maria Filomena Sandalo (Unicamp) e Carlos Alexandre Gonçalves (UFRJ)

LIVROS PUBLICADOS

##Title: Compound Intonation Units in Totoli

Subtitle: Postlexical prosody and the prosody-syntax interface

Series Title: Topics in Phonological Diversity

Publication Year: 2024

Publisher: Language Science Press

                http://langsci-press.org

Book URL: https://langsci-press.org/catalog/book/414

Author: Christoph Bracks

eBook: ISBN: 978-3-96110-436-9 Pages: 194 Price: Europe EURO 0

Abstract: This book is an investigation into aspects of prosody, intonation and the prosody-syntax interface in Totoli, an endangered Austronesian language. With a strongly data-driven approach, the study integrates a combination of experimental evidence from both production and perception with corpus-based evidence through descriptive and

inferential statistics. The study takes the prime structuring unit of speech – the Intonation

Unit – as its principal unit of investigation. It presents a thorough description of the IU, develops an intonational model of it, and investigates the syntactic units it contains. The author argues that the data is best analysed by assuming recursive embedding of

Intonation Units into Compound Intonation Units. This research represents a significant advancement in our understanding of the nature of prosodic systems found in the languages

of the region and in intonational systems in general. It is one of the few investigations into the intonation of Austronesian languages and its analytical proposals are relevant both to prosodic theory and to phonological typology.

##Title: L2 Spanish and Italian intonation

Subtitle: Accounting for the different patterns displayed by L1 Czech

and German learners

Series Title: Open Romance Linguistics

Publication Year: 2023

Publisher: Language Science Press

                http://langsci-press.org

Book URL: https://langsci-press.org/catalog/book/384

Author: Andrea Pešková

eBook: ISBN: 978-3-96110-418-5 Pages: 387 Price: Europe EURO 0

Abstract: The main aim of this book is to contribute to our understanding of the

acquisition of second language intonation, by comparing Czech learners

of Spanish with German learners of Spanish and Czech learners of

Italian. By means of a large production database, the study seeks to

uncover how L1-to-L2 intonational transfer works and what role

prosodic (dis)similarities between languages play. Contrary to most

previous research, the work presents an original multidirectional

cross-linguistic comparison and examines different types of sentence,

such as neutral and non-neutral statements, yes/no questions,

wh-questions, exclamatives and vocatives. The findings reveal positive

and negative transfer from L1 to L2, and the formation of mixed

patterns as well as native-like patterns, which are mainly constrained

by linguistic factors such as the type of sentence and the position of

the tonal event in the utterance. The results are discussed within

Mennen’s (2015) L2 Intonation Learning theory and lead to the

formulation of a Developmental L2 Intonation Hypothesis that makes

several generalizations to characterize interlanguage intonation. This

volume not only represents a step forward in the study of the

acquisition of L2 intonation in general but also offers valuable

findings that can be directly or indirectly applied in the classroom

and will hopefully inspire further research.

##The Ghanaian linguistics nexus

Series Title: Contemporary African Linguistics

Publication Year: 2024

Publisher: Language Science Press

                http://langsci-press.org

Book URL: https://langsci-press.org/catalog/book/427

Editor: Christopher R. Green

Editor: Samson Lotven

eBook: ISBN: 978-3-96110-469-7 Pages: 311 Price: Europe EURO 0

Abstract: There is a long and rich tradition of excellence in Ghanaian

linguistics and the detailed study of Ghanaian languages. This

tradition has expanded by leaps and bounds in recent years, thanks in

part to a cadre of renowned and highly productive Ghanaian linguists

conducting research at universities around the globe, as well as in

Ghana itself. So too has the commitment to careful description,

documentation, and theorizing underlying this tradition been extended

to the students that these scholars have trained. The papers in this

volume reflect the vast reach of this research tradition, grounded in

but expanding beyond Ghanaian languages, ranging from experimental

phonetics, to language description, to political discourse analysis.

proposes a theoretical framework (basic linguistics concepts, as well

as language typology data) together with a methodological approach,

tailored for each type of problems, and, in the end, a selection of

practice problems from past editions of national and international

Linguistics Olympiads. This work is breaking new ground, being the

first of its kind, featuring a large number of languages and problems,

centered around the concept of problem-based learning.
