Hi guys,

i was about to add a new firmware package for a DVB usb stick and i
remembered that Ben mentioned that there is a url under $DISTRO_FW ->
http://firmwares.openbricks.org that is meant to be used to get the
firmwares from.

So this is of course right but currently we have a little "chaotic" mix
of firmware locations:
some are under $DISTRO_FW
some are under $DISTRO_SRCS

First I would propose to stick to the idea of the inventor and keep all
firmwares under $DISTRO_FW and sorted in a directory tree, i.e. DVB,
Wifi, Graphics, ...

Second, due to the fact that (nearly) the only package which uses
$DISTRO_FW currently is "extra-firmwares-nonfree" and that all firmwares
within this package are not visible (only divided into DVB and Wifi
without knowing exactly what is behind), i would propose to detail also
this package and make this firmwares visible in menu- or xconfig. ->
Means breaking "extra-firmwares-nonfree" into its peaces.

The overall target is to get a nice structure of firmware packages,
which is fully transparent within the configuration menu.

Please give me a feedback. If you are ok with is, i can take this task
if you wish.

king regards
Johannes

I second the idea.

Also like this one.
There's no point in installing ALL firmwares on a given target.

ok, hopefully final question. .. to avoid to do the work twice

i propose a package nameing like this:

firmware-[type]-[name]

Example:

firmware-dvb-tevii-s470

or

firmware-wifi-intel-xxx

if you areok with this i will rename the existing packages and add new ones based in the extra-firmware-nonfree package, and so on...

ok, can you give me overwrite permissions for the firmwares folder?
I want to clean up in the same step.

BTW, in the firmwares folder are lot of files which are not linked to openbricks or geexbox.
It seems to me that this folder structure and its content was foreseen for another project.. right ?

You already get permissions for /data/openbricks.org/firmwares/

yes i can write, but not delete some files...

better idea:
i set up a need tree (firmwares2) from scratch so i don't need to mod the original firmware dir.
i anyway made a backup of this folder

dont know. just my thoughts because nearly no package from openbricks uses the content of the firmware dir.

other question (just to prevent that you get bored) :-)

Does it make sense to have all firmware files which are linked in openbricks packages under  firmwares.openbricks.org?
I am asking because many firmware files in openbricks packages are only downloaded from external sources.
