Hi there!

I had sent an email to the Geeks Who Give email address about this,
but I know my email sometimes ends up in spam filters, so I'm not sure
if they ever received it. But I definitely would love to be involved
in the Twestival project, if it comes to fruition in Philadelphia. I
think it sounds awesome! If there's something I can do, just let me
know.

I think i just have a natural aversion to the TW-prefix. But upon further reflection - there's more to my reservations:

As this is already a branded event, I don't think we could necessarily do it under the geekswhogive namesake. There seem to be strict guidelines and things involving portals and webstandards. Melissa - please let us know when you get more information regarding this matter. Of course, geekswhogive will support it, and any other fundraising/ outreach event in the city in any way that is possible; that is the whole "opensource" concept behind our founding. I am just unclear as to how regimented the whole Twestival thing is, which may in fact, be against our collective ideas for the organization.

I did some research on Charity: Water - and have seen nothing but good reports, which is an excellent sign.  They are very well funded by not only huge corporations, but also by some very generous benefactors. They get excellent national press coverage, and seem to be doing very well. They have star studded galas complete with red carpets. (Also, galas = not cheap and "proceeds" refers to any money Left Over from such an event, but that's a lot of $$ for the event that goes down the drain -  all puns intended). So I requested some more basic info from them (ie an annual report which will give a general overview of where their money actually goes).

All of this brings up an excellent question - on the outset of gwg we had made a point of being a local organization - that wanted to support local initiatives to make our community stronger. Now I am by no means saying that this is not a good cause, but does something like this go against what we initially set out to do? A Twestival in Philly is a great idea - but It is already it's own thing, does it need to be a part of GWG? Should it maybe exist independently; doesn't it already?

Morning Everyone,

Kara raises some great points. Kara, thank you for summarizing all of your research.

Since this is a global branded event, I agree with Kara that we probably do not want to do the event as an "official" Geeks Who Give project.  Obviously the support of GWG "members" would be helpful in advertising Twestival.  Melissa has already agreed to head up the Twestival event and I will be helping her.  We have already gotten a lot of responses from others who are interested in volunteering and we welcome any help we can get since we only have a month to get the event organized!

It's interesting if you read the history of Twestival, it appears to have started out very similar to GWG (got me to daydreaming of national & global GWG events, lol), which comes back to Kara's point of our initial plan for GWG.  We did discuss keeping the focus of GWG locally.  My personal opinion is local charities should be our primary focus, but that does not exclude us from helping/participating with other worth-while organizations or events.   We can do "official" GWG events & projects that are locally based and for the non-local ones, we can just put the power GWG has generated to spread the word.  If our mission is to be truly open source and community driven does that include/exclude being involved in things outside of our direct community?  I guess that is a question that needs to be discussed and agreed upon by everyone.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week. There are so many exciting things on the horizon!  And Thanks in advance to everyone for their help and hard work with Geeks Who Give & Twestival.

Gloria

I'm sorry if my email came across in the wrong way, let me clarify:

I think that twestival is great, i just don't think, based on their branding guidelines that we can do it as a part of GWG. Obviously this is a relatively small community, and there will be considerable overlap - and I feel as if new people should be brought in as a part of  that; I know operationnice & ben kessler have shown interest, as have other people. This is a great opportunity to do some good, but perhaps the organizers of that event should start a philly twestival google group, or maybe a basecamp for planning of that event. Melissa - I beleive that you already have a gmail account set up for that event, so creating a new google group should be easy peasy. I am excited that you have taken up a cause that you feel so passionate about, and that you are heading it up. Of course, if twestival has any questions or would like GWG's input, we will do what we can. This could be an excellent opportunity for you to shine Melissa.

It all goes back to this being a small community, and obviously if people in that community are involved in trying to do something good, we will all support it. Twestival is it's own thing - and that is ok - it's great even; but it should be kept its own thing in my mind. That doesn't mean being exclusionary at all, to me anyway., and i apologize if it came across that way.

see you all on the 24th!
