Hey all --

Lots of conversations going on about a lot of ideas. Seems like a good idea to get everyone together face to face. Up until now we've typically done the National Mechanics brunch thing, and I think we could keep it up, if you're all game.

Are people free to meet on Saturday January 24th around 2:30 or 3pm (when it slows down a bit)? That way you could get eggs or a burger, or an egg on your burger. Or you could just start drinking. Your choice.

All in favor, say Aye!

Cheers,
Roz

love the idea, but I'm actually heading out of town on Saturday, the 24th, and have my mother-in-law in town this weekend. Dinner during the week sometime?

The 24th works for me, I've got a potentially crazy work schedule the 20, 21, and 22. Hopefully my lab manager does our schedules for that study soon.

Heh Pals,

Unfortunately, I am helping to present a Social Media Town Meeting
to the LGBT community on January 24th at exactly 3PM and I actually
would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it if you guys could come to support/give
input/ be fabulous.

The event is at the William Way Community Center (1315 Spruce) from
3-5. I could do an earlier brunch, and maybe some of you guys could
come join me at the Town Hall-- the topic is how to use social media
to do community organizing in LGBT communities-- we'd so value your
participation.

Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=46550807062

Can't wait to hang out with you guys (and this should by no means be
viewed as an effort to reschedule the brunch-- if you guys stick with
the 24th at 3 PM, of course I will understand).

Chris,

I would be happy to attend if brunch is moved a little earlier.  I can make it anytime that day.

this is shaping up to be quite the agenda on 1/24. sorry I'll miss it.

Do me a favor and just plan one event where we can get Chris to stand up and say "I'm @harveymilk and I'm here to recruit you!"

So how about we plan on a 1PM brunch at National, and then head over to listen to Chris's rocking town meeting?

Hello friends,

I wanted to check in to see whether we could have brunch in the
vicinity of William Way Center, since I need to be there around 2:15.
I was going to suggest Vallani, on Spruce between 12th and 13th, if no
one has a preference otherwise.

I had a brief discussion with Roz about the agenda last week, and I
thought it would be helpful if we began to flesh out some of our
operating procedures in Geeks Who Give. These could evolve over
time. I think keeping things as informal as possible is great, but I
also think it is good to have some simple structure to insure that we
a) do something and b) don't do too much.

I'm proposing the following as a place to start our discussion, but
others should (of course) feel free to weigh in and adapt/completely
change these either prior to tomorrow's meeting or during it. I
realize that this may be too much structure given our open source/
organic roots, but I thought it would be better to prune structure if
necessary.

I. Geeks Who Give

From the website:

About GWG
Geeks all over the world are proving to be open and caring
individuals, and the Philadelphia tech scene is no exception. This
compassion reaches beyond such limitations as 140 characters on
twitter into real life places like Indy Hall, P’unk Ave, IgnitePhilly,
The Hactory, Geekadelphia and various local establishments and
businesses. Geeks Who Give seeks to mobilize this community to reach
beyond its self contained boundaries, to route that amazingly powerful
and positive energy to people and causes that really need it.

THE THEORY: OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY GIVING

Everyone has something to contribute. Long term goals include idea,
goods & services, and resource banks from which we can draw as well as
coordinating volunteer opportunities on an individual basis and
organizing large scale volunteer efforts for continued organization-
based support.

The vision is for this to happen organically, for those things which
resonate to surface, and those which don’t to naturally recede.
Everyone in the community is invited to participate at whatever level
they feel most comfortable — from planning & organizing outreach to
attending events — to blogging, promoting and evangelizing the cause.
We are more than the sum of our parts, and together, we are capable of
anything.

We all have something to give. What will you give today?

Name: Geeks Who Give

Mission: (DRAFT) Geeks Who Give is a clearinghouse of geek energy
and commitment, and is committed to building and strengthening the
communities and cultures of Philadelphia.

Tagline: (DRAFT) Open Source Community Giving

Operating Procedures (DRAFT):

1. GWG will have a planning committee brunch at least quarterly
(January, April, July, October). This brunch will serve as the
decision making meeting for GWG. GWG will seek to make decisions by
consensus. Between quarterly meetings, group conversation and
project implementation will take place on the GWG googlegroup.

2. GWG will focus upon one large project every six months, as well
as as many as two smaller projects. A large project may be extended
beyond six months with the consensus of the group.

---- A large project requires ongoing commitment, project tracking,
and management of GWG resources, and has outcomes over a period of
time.

---- A small project is a one-time event (food drive, fundraising
event, meet-up, etc.) with one-time outcome.

3. Each project (whether large or small) will have a point person
who takes on responsibility for building a team to implement the
project. Ideally each project team will include:

a. Project point-person
b. On-line presence manager (organize all promotion of project
through appropriate on-line venues)
c. Manager of Geeks (will organize and support participation of
interested Geeks).

4. A GWG project will receive from GWG: Publicity on all GWG on-
line sites as well as in traditional media. Support in building
resources (financial and human) for the project.

========================================

That's my proposed structure to start.

What does this mean practically?

1. That our first large project would be the Philly Futures project
proposed by Stephen Winkler, assuming we all come to consensus on
that.

2. That we might propose one small project tomorrow (a fundraising
event for Spring?)

OK-- those are my thoughts for now. Looking forward to seeing you all
at 1PM at Vallani. I can be reached at 267-977-0638 if anyone has
questions.

Best,

Chris

sorry, those were my initial thoughts, i will put more thought into the questions that are raised here, and plan to bring those reactions to the meeting tomorrow.

Valani sounds good - I've actually never been, but I trust your taste Chris - and also, it will help for us to have more venues to reach out to for future events, so i think it is a good call all around.

Best,
Kara

Thanks for this, Chris. I like the idea of having a rotation of short-term projects within long-term projects and of having people serve the different "roles" on a rotating basis. While structured in a sense, there is no permanent hierarchy of roles. Everyone will do everything over time, and learn from each other while doing it.

Sorry I'll miss the meeting (and the food).  Looking forward to working with everyone on all of this.
