is There any chance of bumping geek week up pone week. DevConnections
is the same week November 9th to the 12th.

Just wondering.. I realize that things are already set in motion. But
I thought I would ask.

No, sorry. Several events already have commitments with their venues for the dates they've set.

I didn't know Geek Week events were conflicting with DevConnections in Vegas, but it's inevitable that it will conflict with *something* no matter where we put it.

Joe is planning on putting together a .NET event (A Day of .NET) and it might be a good idea to put that on the day before (Sunday) or the day after (Friday) DevConnections to see if we can catch any attendees or speakers that are willing to have an extended trip.

Most of the dates and venues have been chosen and set.  The following week is Microsoft PDC also.

So what's wrong with just tying in all the things that "conflict" and make them in name part of GeekWeekAZ, if they are in AZ. If not, We just have to deal with conflicts, as we always do, because there's always something.  You should be up here in SV like I am for the summer.  July 10 is both TechCrunch's RealTimeStream Conference and Guy Kawasaki's Revenue Bootcamp. They didn't know they had chosen the same date:-)

The DevConnections conference, mentioned in the original email is located in LasVegas (pretty decent Microsoft attendance). The Microsoft PDC conference is in LA (probably the biggest US Microsoft conference).  I agree that if a conference/event is in AZ we should bring it under the GeekWeek umbrella (with the event coordinators permission).

The benefit of trying to associate these conferences with GeekWeekAZ goes directly to those conferences, and not at all to the AZ part of geek week. It further legitimizes those conferences, and gives people who might otherwise attend the Geek Week events an alternative they might not have otherwise considered. Since Geek Week AZ seems to be primarily focused on local events, trying to tie it in with national events seems counter intuitive.

Phoenix Design Week is part of Cooper Hewitt National Design Week only in the sense that we are able to advertise our events to the national audience. Unless a similar benefit can be obtained through "partnering" with those other events, it seems like the best idea is to ignore them and hope people would prefer to stay in town and attend GeekWeeks events.

Just my opinion. Keep it in AZ, unless associating with those other events somehow increases attendence here.

Mark,

I don't think anyone was advocating using the Geek Week umbrella for non-AZ events (Francine said "if they are in AZ" and so did Joe).

I agree for the most part with the sentiment of avoiding a national Geek Week, at least until GWAZ gets off the ground. As a city, we should try to stand out and be unique, rather than put ourselves up against other, more established cities. There is something to be said about picking the right times to be competitive versus collaborative. For example, if "Geek Week" comes to represent "an AZ thing," we could benefit greatly from spin-offs by being The Original.

Producing original and daring concepts can do our community a lot of good on the national landscape, because we'll never "own" PodCamp (Boston/Brogan), Ignite (Seattle/O'Reilly), Startup Weekend (Boulder/Hyde), etc.

I don't think national Geek Week is something we need to concern ourselves with this year. People are skeptical and it will take a big splash by our events to get people outside of AZ to care or see what we're even up to.
