My database contains some 6200 people. For some, the events are not sorted in date order. These are mainly those imported years ago from other software, or else I may have forgotten to sort them myself after data entry. Problem is, I don't know which ones need sorting until I open a record.

I know how to sort an individual record, but is there a way I can do it for the entire database in one hit?

Thanks

Mick

It is fairly easy to do that with an internal script. It sounds like a good option so I added it today to the "Miscellaneous Tasks" extension. While I was at it, I added option to sort children in family records too. To get the new version:

1. Choose Extensions->Utilities->Download Extension menu command
2. When the list appears, select "Miscellaneous Tasks" in the "Editing Tools" section and click "To System Extensions"
3. When asked, click to "Overwrite" (which replaces prior version)

To use it

1. Select Extensions->Editing Tools->Miscellaneous Tasks menu command
2. Two new options in the possible tasks can sort events of individuals and/or families or can sort children of all families
2. For events, you can decide to sort events in individuals, families, individuals and families, or just currently selected records (in the current front window)

All will be sorted and the sort will be for events, attributes, and ordinances.

Thank you, John. That will be very handy.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me. I installed it as per instructions, refreshed extensions, even restarted GeditCom II, and still no joy. The extension works for the previously existing options, but when I select either of the new ones, I get this message -

The script named 'Miscellaneous Tasks' could not be found.

Use the 'Refresh Extensions' command to update the list of available options in the Extenions menu.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm on Tahoe using an M1 Macbook Pro

Best

Mick

After I downloaded and installed the new extension version, when I run it, it asks which of a list of tasks to perform. But after selecting either “Sort children of all families” or “Sort events of individuals and/or families", it doesn’t work.

Instead, it pops up a requester that says "The script named 'Miscellaneous Tasks' could not be found.” and suggests "Use the 'Refresh Extensions' command to update the list of available options in the Extenions menu.” (Note the typo in the word Extensions.) But refreshing the list doesn’t help, nor does quitting and restarting GEDitCOM II.

It’s acting as if the Sort Children.gcscpt and Sort Events.gcscpt files aren’t there, and they aren’t!

What am I doing wrong?

Yes, try downloading again. When I exported a version for posting, it did not export the new scripts added under Subversion control. I put them in now and it should work.
