Yes, but it is not actually a GEDitCOM II option --- it is standard MacOS method for customizing tool bars in any applications that use Apple methods for those tool bars:

1. Open a GEDitCOM II window (note that GEDitCOM II has several tool bars corresponding to different window types; you need this setting for each one).
2. Either use Window->Customize Toolbar... menu command or control click on the tool bar and choose "Customize Toolbar..." from the popup menu.
3. Check the "Use small size" check box in the customize window (I also pick Show "Icon only" to get rid of the text labels).

I just noticed this method does not work in Apple's Mail program. I guess they chose not to use Apple toolbar methods.

John. The option is not there anymore. Hence my asking on the forum.

So. How can I reduce the comically huge toolbar(s) icon(s).

According to Apple Documentation, customizing tool bars is still allowed in Sonoma.

Here are two images from my Mac for the customize toolbar command by either control clicking on a window or using the “Window” menu in GEDitCOM II. Do you see these commands? What happens when you select either of those commands?

Some things to try are:

  1. Can you customized tool bars in any applications?
  2. Often a Mac reboot can fix such things.
  3. You could download a fresh copy of GEDitCOM II. If you did not install the latest version (3.1, build 4), now is a good time to do that.
  4. More extreme is you could delete the GEDitCOM II preferences file (at ~/Library/Preferences/com.geditcom.GEDItCOMII.plist)

If you try #4, you will have to re-enter your unlocking code (hopefully you still have it). Instead of deleting the preferences file, you could move to your desktop and then restart GEDitCOM II. If that fixes it, then enter your code again. If not, move it back.

If none of these worked, the most likely explanation is MacOS bug. I tried a google search and one link says Somona 14.1.1 can’t customize tool bars on MacBook Air M2. What computer do you have? Problems like that mean you will have to wait for Apple to fix it (nothing GEDItCOM II can do). You should check for a Sonoma update (or google some more for possible solutions without waiting for Apple).

Note the customizing Icons in at least MacOS Sonoma did have problems because Apple changed the way it works. The next version will have a preference to pick icon size in tool bars.
