I would like to be able to split my Geditcom file so I can have the
four grandparents and their ancestors in one each. How can I do
this?

About the easiest way would be to use the Ancestors Icon at the top of any card:

1. Bring up the card for the individual you want. i.e. paternal grandfather but since you the grandparents separately, use the four great grandparents.
2. Click on the "Ancestors" Icon to bring up the ancestor tree.
3. Click on Tree and from the dropdown menu, select "Send selected to Album" > New Album
4. Go back to the index page, select "New Album" and change to your grandparents name for identification.

Do this for each of your great grandparents.

There is a way to add a single individual to an existing album but that should not be needed since your great grandparents card will show their children.

The only problem with this is that the headings for the new albums will not be the same as your main index and will require you to do some column adding to each of those albums according to what you want them to be. John is working on fixing that feature so that you only have to select a page setup from a list and will be out with the next update to GEDitCOM II.

I am using this same feature to keep track of all the merges that are done to the main database plus using version numbers on the saved files so I always have a backup incase something happens to the present version of the database. This besides having a full time automatic disk backup gives me a lot of available working files regardless of what happens.

Thanks for that - can manage that.
Is there anyway I can have an album with the descendants of an ancestor but only down to a grandparent. - I only seem to have my direct ancestors.

Cannot think of a way to do that one as it would require the ability to limit the number of generations as a factor of the building the descendant's tree. Other than that, it would require the ability of removing descendant families, i.e. children of said grandparent's descendants. I'll have to let John address this one as he may know of a way to do this.

You can customize ancestors and descendants that go to an album and can combine various sets of ancestors or descendants as well.

To limit the generations, open a tree window (ancestors or descendants) and expand or contract branches until you get exactly the ones you want. When ready choose menu command to send members to an album (either a new album or an existing album)

To add to that set you can look at more trees, select the branches you want, and send them to the same album. You need not worry about adding the same person twice. The album will only have the person once.

When trees first open, they show the number of generations specified in the tree preferences (in the preferences window). The default is 5 (or 6), but you can pick any other number by changing the "Initial Generations" field. It will be easiest to expand and contract if you pick a number close the number of generations you will want in the album.

Once the album is filled, you can export to a new GEDCOM file and then open that in GEDitCOM II.
