Developing an understanding and knowledge of music theory helps musicians at all levels to perform with greater sensitivity, awareness and control. Our Music Theory exams are open to learners of any age. You can start with any grade and skip grades if you want to.
If you are taking a Practical or Performance Grade 6, 7 or 8, you must pass Grade 5 or above in Music Theory before you book your exam. This is to ensure that you have the understanding you need to successfully interpret and perform music at these higher grades. We also accept Grade 5 in Practical Musicianship or a Jazz Practical Grade subject.
Our Music Theory exams cover the essential building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes at Grades 1 to 5 before moving on to harmony, counterpoint, composition and a broad knowledge of western music at Grades 6 to 8.

Hi David! Thanks for your comment. I have now changed the settings so that the correct answers are shown at the end. The questions are based on those asked in the UK music theory exams set by the two leading exam boards, ABRSM and Trinity. They have always included music history as well as theory. Best wishes!

On the Internet, what are called MP3 music files are all the rage. They can be easily created from music CDs and posted online. You can play them on computers or on handheld digital devices like the Rio, from Diamond Multimedia. The sound quality is pretty good.... (sound) What can the music industry do? Five major record companies are joining with IBM in a trial that will offer a group of consumers in San Diego with high speed cable modems....the ability to download music faster and with better quality. The hope is...they'll be willing to pay for it. Paul Vidich of Warner Music says the idea is to make it easy ...

Everybody has their own routine for how to study for exams, do homework, read or focus on a particular task. Listening to a study playlist is a great way to center your attention and lift your mood. Listening to music can also reduce stress, which is a plus when it comes to balancing a busy schedule of work, school and family!
There are important benefits to beginning exams. Students progressively grow their musical abilities from year to year. Level by level, children expand their abilities in performance, technical patterns, and musicianship, all beginning at the Elementary levels.
Go to the placement test in Sakai (the Claremont Collaborative Learning Environment). To make the link work you will need to log in to Sakai first and join the Music Placement test site. Do so by using your Pomona (or other Claremont College) username and password.

Placement exams are offered for chemistry, calculus, music theory, and foreign languages. While many of the exams are available online throughout the year, a few are only offered during Orientation. For the exams that are available online, we ask that new students take them during the summer prior to their first semester.
In general, students who plan on taking a course in math, chemistry, music, or a foreign language should take a placement exam. That said, there are some exceptions! If you're studying a foreign language for the first time, you can enroll in 101-level course without taking a placement exam. Also, in some cases an AP, IB, or SAT II score may be used for placement, making the placement exam unnecessary. For more information, we recommend watching these informational videos and also reading the relevant section(s) below.
Students who have previously taken a math, chemistry, music theory, or foreign language course at another college or university may be able to use that coursework to determine placement. In order to receive transfer credit and use transfer courses for placement, you should have the other institution send an official transcript directly to our Registrar's Office.
New students who plan to take chemistry at any point during their time at Occidental are required to take the online Chemistry Placement Test prior to Orientation. Exception: Student who received a score of 4 or 5 on the Chemistry AP exam have the option of enrolling in CHEM 130 without taking the placement test, but are encouraged to contact the department chair if they have questions about this placement.

Students interested in taking music classes who have not previously studied music theory do not need to take the placement exam; they should enroll in MUSC 101 during registration. Students with previous experience are encouraged to take the music theory placement test during the summer prior to arriving on campus.

Note: For online placement exams, scores are typically not available until the next business day. Placement results based on AP and IB scores will not be available until an official score report/transcript is received and processed by the Registrar's Office.
SRF has multiple levels of difficulty that progress with more complex rhythms, larger leaps, expanded ranges, and increased accidentals. Anyone from beginning level students to the most seasoned musician can generate music appropriate to their abilities.
Having bought new headphones, I want to evaluate how well they play different musicgenres, bass richness, do they reproduce vocals well, concert music, how well do theybalanced across the entire frequency range, and so on.
Using generator you can explicitly set the sound frequency that will be played inheadphones to evaluatehow well do they work in the selected range, are there any problems (clogging, wheezing, other distortions)at a certain level of gain (volume). Frequencies are tied to musical notes.
