Hi, can I use Leap Motion and Geco to control MIDI in music apps in the iPad? How do I go about mapping it?
Thanks.

Hi,

Yes and no :-)

You can't directly plug in the Leap Motion controller into the iPad. However, you can generate MIDI on a computer by plugging the Leap Motion controller in there, running Geco MIDI and sending the MIDI to the iPad using WIFI or a device like iConnectMIDI.

Take care,

Hi Geert,

Thank you for your reply.

Well, I can connect the Leap Motion directly to the iPad via the Camera Connection Kit from Apple (30 pin iPad conector to USB adapter) but I don't know if I can configurate it on the iPad using Geco (I still haven't received my Leap Motion device). I saw a video on YouTube of someone controlling an iPad app with it.

If I understand correctly you suggest configurating the LP in a DAW using Geco in the computer and, after assigning the MiDi commands to different controls, connect the computer to the iPad via a WiFi or AdHoc connection and then the app receives the MiDi signals, correct? I will try that. I don't have an iConnectMIDI device or similar.

Best and Happy New Year!

Connecting the Leap Motion controller to the iPad doesn't do anything, you need a dedicated driver, which is provided through the Leap Motion software on the computer. This doesn't exist for iOS and probably never will due to Apple's very restrictive approach regarding custom drivers.

If you generate MIDI on the computer and then connect that to the iPad over iConnectMIDI or CoreMIDI WIFI, it will work just fine.

Take care,

Geert
