Best way to create a live USB on Windows ? (Also, is Gecko suitable for gaming ?)

I'm far away from home and I recently bought a pretty decent laptop. My main rig at home still has Windows 8.1 on it and that's not gonna change. However, I've always wanted a (semi ?) dedicated Linux machine so I thought: "Why not use the laptop ?"

It's got Windows 10 on it and that's gonna stay (not gonna mess with the MSI stuff) but I still can't find a suitable distro for me. I've always been a fan of Antergos, OpenSUSE and such but I never had the time to set them up properly. (I always went for the KDE ones and KDE5 seems to be.. broken. It just refused to work on my main rig)

So yeah, first of all, how do I create a live USB on Windows ? I've tried LiLi, Unetbootin, Rufus and such but they always had problems.

Second, what should I go for ? The Leap ones or the Tumbleweed ones ? (Set on XFCE right now) If I go for Tumbleweed then am I better off just using Antergos ?

And third, are there any performance differences between Gecko, SUSE and an Antergos install ?

Hi there,

This should do the trick:

If you don't have extremely new hardware or if you want to use
proprietary graphics drivers, the Leap-based "Static" images should be a
good fit. But if you have very new hardware that needs a newer kernel to
boot, or if you want much fresher package versions, Tumbleweed based
"Rolling" editions should work well. I run the GeckoLinux "Rolling"
Cinnamon edition on my daily driver, and it's been extremely stable and
uneventful. In my opinion and experience, Tumbleweed is considerably
better tested and requires less administration time than an Arch-based
system.

Probably not.

I hope you like GeckoLinux! Have fun.

> Wait, sorry. Yeah, I'd love to use the nvidia drivers for the 980M, am I better off with Leap then ?

Most likely yes. I don't have much experience with the proprietary
Nvidia drivers, but I've read they can be a major pain on Tumbleweed
because the kernel rolls faster than the Nvidia devs. You could ask for
more informed opinions on:
https://forums.opensuse.org/forum.php
Since GeckoLinux is pure openSUSE + Packman packages the same advice
would apply.

The way you use UnetBottin or Lili make them works or not. Depend of the configuration you made (and then depend of your mode of boot: MBR or GPT/UEFI).
Also, Antergos (so... ARch in the back) is a good distribution as well as Manjaro or Apricity (arch to). KDE5 (plasma) is still very new due to the "new" qt5 GUI... that is why it still buggy. If you want a stable and funny desktop, don't use them, there is many other who do the same that KDE does.
I'm actually try to show people on youtube a list of Linux distribution for beginners, but actually still in French langage.
I see that Solus is one of the top 5 beginners distribution... an other should be Mint Linux (debian style), and Manjaro or Antergos to.

You can do use Linux on top side, then configure a virtual machine for run windows... but you also need to go passthrough your Nvidia card. (blacklist this GPU then... you will use only for windows this way)
Actually, if you want also to make force to run some screwed (by commercial fu... desision) part of your GPU, you can also do it well from Qemu (but... if you can not config your OS? i think you will not able to make it running, it is not beginners-friendly).

Or you can do use steam for your games (i never play games... but i read many does with that).

For your driver, you first have to well look at the driver name to install (and be sure to install it without other one who can override it).
Then you can use blumblebee for switch between Intel included GPU and Nvidia GPU. Also, use of Nouveau should improve performance and maybe loose some other thinks... need to try to see.
Go to search for help on IRC freenode server on #archlinux channel where you can find the top level admins on linux arch distro like (don't tell them you are under Antergos... they will cry...).

There is no real difference "perf" between distros (not to much or maybe... best answer should be: perf about what ?).
depend on what you are searching perf about. If you are serching perf for do games, best and easy way would be to buy a console game (from far).
