I'm using Geckolinux Cinnamon.  It was at version Leap 42.1 when the following problem first arose after I updated the system about may 2 to 3 weeks ago.

When I try to log in with my name and password, the screen flashes and returns to the lightdm login screen. Repeating the login doesn't help.  I had to CTRL-ALT-F2 to get to text mode in order to login, then apply the "startx" command to get X started.  From there it was fine.

Anyway, since this is not my main distro and I was feeling adventurous, I backed up this partition and then using your instructions in the other sub-board here, I upgraded this partition to Leap 42.2 yesterday.

It seemed to go well so I'm now running 42.2, but the lightdm login problem is still there.  The startx command is still able to get me back into X.

Is there something I can do to get rid of the log in bug, e.g. reinstall some packages, edit some config files, etc?  It is clearly not an upgrade issue but something that arose fairly recently in 42.1.

Appreciate the help.

Hi there, thanks for reporting.

Did you make sure that it's not trying to use a Wayland session? You
could also check your ~/.xession-error file and/or /var/log/lightdm/ and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I can't tell from the lightdm login screen whether it's in Wayland session.

It just has 3 options: Cinnamon, Cinnamon with software rendering, and Openbox.

Nothing in xsession-errors file, but in xsession-errors-:0 there is:

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/vboxadd-xclient.sh: line 26: notify-send: command not found

Hi again, I'm honestly not too sure what might have gone wrong. I'd
recommend trying a fresh install and upgrade. And regarding the error
logs, could you please post them to the openSUSE forum for some more
experienced troubleshooters to take a look at?

Thanks, and best regards.
