Hi everyone, I'm pleased to announce a major update to the GeckoLinux Plasma
NEXT edition. The purpose of this edition is not to replace the regular GeckoLinux
Static Plasma release, but rather as an alternative for those who want the latest Plasma stable release on top of a stable openSUSE Leap base. This is achieved thanks to some additional OBS repositories together with the polished GeckoLinux configuration for the Plasma desktop. Like all GeckoLinux editions, Plasma
NEXT can be smoothly updated from the official repositories of openSUSE and Packman as new package versions become available. In the case of the Plasma
NEXT edition, the next major release of Plasma 5 will also be available from the official KDE repositories in the openSUSE Build Service whenever it is released at a future date.
What's new: A massive number of improvements have been made to the base system since the last release of Plasma
NEXT. The base system has been updated to openSUSE Leap 42.2, with the further addition of countless Packman repository updates. Additionally, the GeckoLinux pre-configuration of the openSUSE repositories has been greatly improved to avoid prompts to trust repositories. Also popular proprietary software such as Skype, Google Hangouts, and Google Chrome are available from online repositories without any additional configuration. Like in all other GeckoLinux editions, the default installer is now Calamares, with the older
yast2-live-installer also still available for advanced users that prefer it. Most importantly for the
NEXT edition is the
new release of Plasma 5.9, with many refinements and new features.
