Theexplanations provided in your link are not very convincing, IMO, and I'd be curious to see a comparison using the same DAC between the USB input on one hand, and the ethernet input on the other, using exactly the same network configuration (netwotk cables (fiber?) and network source), but without the Diretra protocol. If this has not been done, then any difference can be explained by a multitude of factors which have nothing to do with the Diretra protocol.
These types of "tweaks" are probably not universal. If the improvements were completely random, I would assume high-end companies in Japan would not have bothered integrating this solution and offering them in 2000$ products, as they are not out to swindle their customers (though audiophiles can be an easy target!).
If you want to be fair in your presentation, you also need to mention that Philippe (pda0), the guy whose experience you are refering to, has a Tambaqui DAC, that he feeds with Roon as a Roon endpoint. His setup is therefore very different from the other people on the French forum who are using Roon+HQPlayer+Diretta and feeding their DAC through the USB input.
pda0 was not interested in HQPlayer as the Tambaqui is doing the asynchronous upsampling in the DAC itself. He also had no experience in using the USB input of his Tambaqui prior to giving a trial to Diretta. He finally struggled installing Windows aso, which made his experience cumbersome.
I don't agree with your logic, but regardless, if there is no clear improvement with the ethernet input of a Tambaqi maybe these Japanese manufacturers should try to improve their DACs rather than sell additional boxes ?
Also, Patatorz, in his site, claims he has had improvements even without HQ Player. Cannot tell from his signature what DAC he has, but I get a feeling it is probably expensive. His blog article does not even mention which DAC he tried it with: -diretta-protocol-an-improvement-in-digital-streaming/
Yes, let's pretend that we all have perfect DACs, with perfect ethernet connexions and asynchronous upsampling at the DAC. This would be the end of the problems of computer audio and most of the sponsors in this forum would be out of business.
I think people are interested in knowing that these kind of tweaks are usesless if you have a DAC with a good Ethernet input. This is interesting given that Diretta claims to improve sound by changing the network protocol...
Fully agree, more different feedbacks we have from different angles, better it would be as far people are open to read and acknowledge the experience, what i'm doing with Philippe's feedback. The testimony of philippe is clearly showing it is not universaland i assume it is the case for nearly all the tests and association of devices. The way you summarized it was introducing some bias around what Philippe clearly explained around his TAMBAQUI DAC.
Concerning my words, yes very different from Philippe, and lot of people also are not recognizing their system through Philippe's feedback. is it a problem : not at all and it helps to understand how this solution is working and could bring some solutions to other.
The DAC i use is a dCS Vivaldi and its Upsampler. I don't use HQplayer as i'm finding that dCS upsampler is doing a better job than HQPlayer for some DSD upsampling limited to DSD128. On this system, Diretta is providing better SQ according to me than using the Vivaldi ethernet connection. Does it mean that dCS is doing a poor ethernet connnexion : i don't know but seems MolaMola is doing better according to Philippe experience and this is a great information.
So I will speak for myself. pda0, whose experience with Diretta you have been relating to, and myself, have a common background : same age, same Alma Matter, same scientific approach to music reproduction. We both had Devialet before and I visited him a few times.
What I noticed very much differentiated us in our quest for music reproduction was the relationship to time domain effects of music reproduction. While I started to investigate the high precision clocks of Mutec, he showed no interest in this field.
And my own perceptions and feelings about Diretta is that this product is going a step forward into removing the effects jitter has on digital music reproduction. Using Diretta together with a high precision clock just improves the 3d holographic presentation of the sound stage, increases the air between tones, the separation between instruments and voices, aso...
So why not let everyone decide for himself/herself and eventually give Diretta a trial ? They offer one month trial period. Very easy for each of us to test and evaluate. And therefore judge for oneself...
All I did was highlight your friend's experience here by quoting his conclusions. You may find it frustrating that I don't share your enthusiasm, and I find it annoying that I am told that I twisted his words. I should not have replied to Patatorz's initial reaction, and left it at that.
What was difficult for me was the feeling I had you singled out the experience of an outlier in the population of French enthusiasts of Diretta and made it a general truth for everyone who had a high quality DAC.
You insist ! I extracted the conclusions, which summarized his experience (he has since modified slightly his post, BTW, but the conclusions remain). If you have an issue with what he wrote, take it up with him instead of accusing me. You could have also offered some constructive thoughts on his experience, instead of repeatedly claiming that I distorted things.
I share my enthusiasm on this forum about some products, as you do. Recently, someone tried the product I talked about extensively, and returned it. I even took the trouble of re-posting his "negative" impressions - because we learn as much from the positive as from the negative criticism (as long as it remains "criticism" towards the product and does not turn into personal attacks). Manufacturers can also learn from the criticism - and may end up improving things. So there is no point in trying to hide things under the rug.
You should take a breath and start thinking that universe is not running around you. Nobody is accusing you..you are using words that are really strong and completely out of the topic. Please take a breath.
If you can't handle me simply posting some person's "unenthusiastic" feedback on Diretta by offering constructive explanations or suggestions instead of discrediting me (starting by claiming I distorted his comments) than maybe you are the one who should question your attitude and objectives here.
Why fixate on Pda0 setup ?
As a newbie in computer building, he was fedup with Windows and did not complete the experiment.
You should rather focus on the positive reviews from more experienced people
For me this new protocol is a godsend, maybe you should try it to make your own opinion
