Apprentice-mentor is the traditional method for training surgical residents, but with the advent of time, advanced techniques have been developed to train residents. Simulation training is a time-effective method for training residents and is being used globally, but the majority of training hospitals in Pakistan have been practising apprenticeship model since it came into being. This review was planned to demonstrate the results of studies comparing the efficacy of trainees trained via the traditional apprenticeship model versus simulator-based training. Pubmed and Google Scholar were searched. Keywords used were 'simulation-based training', 'laparoscopic simulators' and 'surgical teaching methods'. Articles published between 1995 and 2017 were selected for review. The search was limited to articles published in English language. The review advocates implementation of simulation for training as well as assessment. This can be a magnificent step towards upgrading our healthcare system.

The training simulator comprises operation training systems for a substation supervisory control system and protection relays. The former shows technicians how to control substation equipment, and trains them in handling power line incidents and securing recovery. The latter promotes better understanding of the protection relay, which quickly isolates the affected part of the power line in the event of an incident, and provides training of its operation.

VirtaMed provides simulation training for TURP, TURB, laser BPH with Thulium or HoLEP, and morcellation. During the training, trainees learn how to master instruments and manage complications without involving live patients.

Patient images can be converted into life sized 3D virtual holograms helping the students to visualize every procedure. Haptic feedback allows the students to touch and feel the different tissues in the 3D patient replica.

Our trainees learn techniques and complete procedures on this simulator by practicing again and again at increasing levels of difficulty, with hundreds of new challenges, scenarios and complications to make each experience unique.

Eyesi provides objective and immediate feedback after each virtual exam, so that trainees can systematically improve their skills. Our trainees examine a wide range of simulated clinically relevant cases before they meet their first real patient.

Through this simulator, we train our learners for a wide range of angiography and interventional procedures. It enables learners to enhance technical skills, clinical decision-making abilities and procedural proficiency.

It is an advanced arthroscopic training simulator. This simulator features a line of simulated procedures, combining fiberglass / polyurethane anatomical models (shoulder, knee and hip) with 3D images and haptic sensation, to allow users to learn key aspects of the procedures. Simulated procedures are performed utilising a realistic set of tools as used in the OR including the arthroscopic camera, which allow our trainees to acquire a true-to-life hands-on experience.

Lisa Leighton, people director at Northern, explained that the simulators are the highest level of specialist training equipment: We have around 3,500 drivers and conductors based across our network and welcome approximately 400 new starters into these crucial roles every year.

For each birthing simulator purchased through Laerdal Medical for use in high-income countries, a second one is donated to support the Helping Mothers Survive initiative in low-resource settings. The donated simulators help birth attendants to improve their skills and competency to save the lives of mothers and newborns. We call this Buy One, Gift One (BOGO).

Each year 300,000 mothers and 2.7 million babies die due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Ninety-nine percent of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The majority of these mothers and babies that die on the day of birth can be saved by well-trained and equipped birth attendants.

Thanks to the contributions to Buy One, Gift One, more than 6000 simulators have been donated. They are being distributed to partners, together with educational materials, to train birth attendants in the Helping Mothers Survive program.

Organizations that have received BOGO units include International Confederation of Midwives, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, American Academy of Pediatrics, UNFPA, Jhpiego, Amref, Association of Malawian Midwives, Ethiopian Midwives Association, Tanzania Association of Midwives, Rwanda Association of Midwives, Midwives Association of Zambia, Croix-Rouge Franais, International Council of Nurses and East, Central and Southern Africa Health Comunity.
