(K)ubuntu 9.04 can't install gears (firefox chrome)

Hello

I tried to install gears for the latest chrome browser, but
it is not supported (very odd).

I then tried out firefox 3.6.11 (vs 4 is still not supported)
and again could not install it but for different reason.

The message says that the firefox built type x86_gcc3 version is not compatible
with google gears.

What shall I do???
