I have Gears installed on Safari and synced my GAFYD docs and regular
gmail account reader this morning with no issues.

When I try to load either in Safari, I'm getting the "you are not
connected to the Internet" error as if gears was never installed.

OS X 10.5.5
Safari 3.1.2
Gears 0.4.22.0

Same in Firefox:
FF 3.0.1
Gears 0.4.20.0

Any ideas?

Hi Jeff, what do you mean by GAFYD docs? Has Google Reader + Safari worked for you in the past?

GAFYD: Google Apps For Your Domain. The package at google.com/a

I'm not sure if it worked before. I sync'd all the data hoping for it to work today- the first time I've tried it offline.

It sync'd without throwing any errors in both docs and 2000 reader items.

Hey Jeff --

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems.  Just to clarify: you can sync GAFYD and Google Reader on Firefox & Safari, but you are getting the "you are not connected to the internet" error when trying to view them?  It happens both in Safari and Firefox, or just Safari?  Are you setting your browser in offline mode or is this happening while you're online and tring to view?  Do other Gears enabled apps, such as rememberthemilk.com work for you?

Thanks,
Ben

Hey Ben-

Exactly right. I haven't tried with RTM since I don't use it.

I haven't tried setting the browser to "offline mode", but because I didn't know there was one! Are you supposed to do that every time?

I'll give that a try and report back.

No, you shouldn't have to set the browser to "offline mode".  I asked because if this error you are seeing is happening while you have an internet connection, then something is definitely wrong.  Syncing your account should not block you from using the apps while online.

It would help if you could try some other Gears demos/applications and let me know if they work.  I'd like to narrow the problem down to either your installation of Gears, or some sort of a glitch with GAFYD/Reader -- that way we can investigate it further.
Here are some demos to try:

Ben

Hey Ben-

When I'm online everything works just fine. It's when I lose a connection (airplane) and I want to read my feeds or see my Google Docs when I get the offline thing.

Online, things sync fine and I can read it like normal.

And in case it matters: the Reader issue is a regular google account with Gmail. I'm having the exact same issues with my GAFYD docs.

Did the samples work fine for you?  Specifically the ResourceStore/ManagedResourceStore ones?

Hey Ben-

I won't have a chance to test until tomorrow morning. I'll report back with any findings ASAP though.

Thanks for your help so far!

Hey Ben-

Both the ResourceStore and ManagedResourceStore demos work perfectly fine.

Hey Jeff --

You aren't doing one of the following, are you?
1) switching browsers or profiles or computers
2) switching between accounts
3) switching from http to https or vice versa

If none of those, have you tried deleting your cached files and retrying?

Thanks,
Ben

Hey Ben-

No to all. One account, etc.

I've emptied the cache, reinstalled Gears and even reset all of Safari.  Still nothing, yet.

I'm having the same problems with FF/Safari on Reader.  I will look into that with the Reader team.  As far as GAFYD, it should work.  Here is a list of all things that could potentially be a problem in these situations:
1)  English not set for Browser + GAFYD
2)  Third party cookies not enabled
3)  Safari didn't install properly (Do you have the Safari -> Google Gears Settings menu?)
4)  A bad capture (Did you get the orange icon while syncing?)
5)  Leftover resources from a bad capture (your Gears Cache folder has bad data in it still)

Since you can't access GAFYD while offline, it really sounds like some part of the sync is failing.  Have you looked in the Gears directory at the files that are cached?  If it is saying you are offline then that means that the main HTML index page isn't getting downloaded.  Or if it is, Gears isn't serving it correctly.

Hey Ben-

Thanks for the response.  Here's what I've got:

1) English is set for everything.
2) Third party cookies work everywhere else.
3) I have the safari->google gears settings menu. I've reinstalled twice.
4) My syncs seem to work just fine. Things says it's syncing, works for a few seconds (updating 2000 items) then says it's good. Shows the offiline grey icon.  With Docs, it says that everything's synced and fine. I'm not getting an orange icon.
5) I completely dumped my ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Google Gears for Safari folder and resynced with Reader.

The HTML page isn't even loading. That definitely seems to be first part of the issue. Where should it be downloaded to?

For now lets focus on GAFYD.  Reader does have a bug and it's not anything specific to your machine.  GAFYD should be working without a hitch, though.  What's the status of a GAFYD sync?

Thanks,
Ben

Hey Ben-

I have no idea why, but now my docs work just fine.  Maybe it had something to do with reinstalling Gears two or three times...?

So, GAFYD docs (two different domains, even!) are working just fine, it seems.

Thank you for your help.  How will we know when the Google Reader bug is fixed?

Thanks-
Jeff

Hey Jeff --

I don't think it was the reinstalling of Gears, but probably one of the other steps.  Either way, I'm happy to hear it works!

As far as Reader goes, I will submit a bug report with them and try to report back here when it is fixed.

Thanks,
Ben
