I am able to install Gears (0.3.24.3) for Linux, and it shows up in
the Add-Ons. When I restart and click on Tools->Google Gears Settings,
nothing happens, and when I click "Offline" on Reader or Remember The
Milk, it just asks me to install Gears again. The page at
gears.google.com also does not have any indication of it being
installed.

I have read earlier posts about libstdc++5, which is installed, but
after reinstalling libstdc++5 (libstdc++5 1:3.3.6-15ubuntu6) and then
reinstalling gears, I still have this issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Do you have libstdc++6 installed? In not, please try installing that
and let us know if it helps.

I have libstdc++6-4.2 installed, as well as 4.1.

Sadly, I've uninstalled/reinstalled several times, but with no luck.
