Google Gears won't update

When I try to update Google Gears (through automatic updates) from
0.5.32.0 to 0.5.33.0, I get the following error message:

"Google Gears" could not be installed because it is not compatible
with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the
author of this item about the problem.

My browser/OS:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.15) Gecko/2009102815
Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.15 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

Fixed it by reinstalling Gears.  I went to http://gears.google.com and clicked on the link in "Click here to re-install."

It didn't work for me. After reinstalling, my Google Gears version is
still 0.5.32.0.

yah, its got me too. started a few days ago (but perhaps earlier). i
upgraded to 3.5 about a month ago. possibly related. anyway, i find

If you'd like to run the Gears for Firefox on a Linux (32-bit)
platform, please make sure your system has glibc 2.3.5 or higher and
libstdc++6 (Gears 0.3) or libstdc++5 (Gears pre-0.3).

OK. i've got libstdc++6 installed, but glibc? searching for glibc my
package manager shows only glibc-doc and glibc-source. maybe they
mean libc6? (mine is at 2.7-10) described as the GNU C Library:
Shared Libraries.

also http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/hardy/glibc (for instance)
shows libc as the GNU C Library: Shared libraries

In any case, I still get the error.

I too have the same Firefox version and the same error every time it
tries to update itself.

Damn annoying since I cannot seem to stop it from popping a least 2-3
of these message a day.

gears.google.com and clicked the install link, I saw it download 3.5MB
and when the browser restarted, it had 0.5.32.0, but suggested I ought

second time it downloaded something that was only 2.7MB and still
called itself 0.5.32.0, but that gives that "not compatible" pop-up
that has been mentioned here so many times.

Is this group the best way to contact the gears support folks or are
we just talking among ourselves? "Please contact the author of the
item about the problem" is certainly a vexing part of the pop-up's
message.

As far as I can tell there is no Gears version 0.5.33. The latest
version of Gears is
0.5.32 and there's no update available.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Firefox 3.5.6pre (currently) and was
seeing this same
problem. I had installed Gears by installing the 0.5.32 .xpi file via
the Gears
website. But for some reason, Gears 0.5.32 was also installed via the
Synaptic
package manager. This is a separate install from the .xpi file found
on the Gears
website and appeared to have been causing the problem. I removed Gears
via the
package manager and the problem disappeared. This *did not* remove the
Gears
extension from Firefox.

My guess is that a conflict was caused by the system attempting to
install Gears into
Firefox when the latest version was already installed via an
extension.

I don't know what other ditros use for a package manager but I would
suggest checking
to see if your version of Linux already has Gears installed as a
package and if so,
remove it and use the "official" .xpi version of the Gears website.
This way will
guarantee regular updates which you may not get via the repositories.
