As a total ignoramus about Gears, I want to know if and how I can use
Gears to store my blogsite's content on my home computer.

It sounds like you are trying to turn your home computer into a web
server. This is not what gears does. If you want to store your blog
content on your computer and be able to go offline and still have
access to that content for yourself only, then that is what gears can
do.
