New issue 1023 by paul.x.simpson: Firefox 4 Support
http://code.google.com/p/gears/issues/detail?id=1023
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Download and install Google Gears for Windows XP using Firefox 4 Beta 2.
2. Check Firefox Add-Ons manager.
3. Try to use a site (such as Offline Gmail) with Google Gears features.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Add-On manager lists Gears as "not compatible." Gmail redirects users to
Gears download page as if it doesn't realize Gears is already installed.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Firefox 4 Beta 2 on Windows XP 32-bit.
Please provide any additional information below.
I realize HTML5 is Google's direction but as Google has not yet implemented
HTML5 features such as offline Gmail I am hoping that Gears will get one
more update for Firefox 4?
FF4b3/Win7-32bit:
I install gears & "Add-on Compatibility Reporter" but still can't use
offline Gmail!
I also hope that you'll be able to release a version of gears which will be
compatible with Firefox 4. We thought about moving our gears application to
a new HTML 5 implementation, but felt that it was still too early in the
game, especially concerning the uncertainty over which direction that local
storage was taking: whether IndexedDB or WebSQLDatabase...
Would you be able to let us know whether you are intending on releasing a
version which will work in Firefox 4?
Thanks.
Could you let us know whether you'll release a new version which will work
in Firefox 4 ...would be great if you would release one, will save a lot of
trouble migrating our application to html 5...! Thank you!
Same here; I'm using FF 4.0b3 and Windows XP Sp3; Offline Gmail just asks
me to install Gears over and over again.
it isn't just on windows there is a problem, under linux gears isn't
compatible with anny of the up to date browsers (no ff4 support, no chrome
support,...).
ther are two ways to solve this:
- Make more and faster gears releases compatible with different platforms
(maybe also chrome on linux)
- Phase-out gears in favor of HTML5 and make all google "offline" products
HTML5 capable
i personally prefer the second one, but the first one would be great to
Currently on FF 4.0b6.
Aww, I was hoping Gears would work on it. Turns out it won't.
Any idea of when a release will come? For the Firefox 4 betas?
Google has ceased development on Gears in favor for HTML5

It unlikely that the current release of Gears v0.5.36.0 will be updated to
support Firefox 4.
The blog entry mentioned by @v5point0 is 8 months old. The Google Apps
still do not support HTML5 Web Storage[1], and there has been very little
communication from Google regarding their plans for offline applications.
Since Google Gears has been abandoned, and Web Storage for Google Apps is
not available for Firefox 4 (and other browsers?), this means that offline
mode for Google Mail, Google Calendar and Google Docs is currently dead.
I'm using Firefox v4.0b12 and recently installed Google Gears v0.5.36.0 but
an error message appears showing incompatibility of Gears version with
Firefox
Confirmed with Ubuntu Natty-beta, FF 4.0b12 and Google Gears v0.5.36.0.

"Support for Gears in Firefox and Internet Explorer will continue."
9 months on from first comment, do I or do I not change mail etc over to
google. Gears is critical where internet connections are always being
interrupted even in cities like Melbourne. Latest version of Explorer also
incompatible with Gears.
as explained here: http://gearsblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/stopping-gears.html
support of new browsers will never occurs directly from Google
