I am on Debian, but that should be fairly close to what is available on
Ubuntu.
You can check the log /var/log/gearman-job-server/gearmand.log which is
written to by the Gearman daemon. It looks it fails to start for some
reason and the log file might given a clue.
You can make it more verbose by passing the --verbose INFO or --verbose
DEBUG to gearmand. That can be done by editing
/etc/default/gearman-job-server and adding it in PARAMS.
You can also try running it manually as your regular user and see what
happens?
