Here is a simple script that I created in order to create my own story using both Puppet Pals and Toontastic. I believe that for students to have success when creating digital stories, planning and writing out a logical script or outline is the key no matter what app / technology is used!

Not only are digital stories a great way for shy and withdrawn students to express their creativity and ideas, but also, they enable other students to practice their storytelling skills at their own pace and comfort level.

Although Toontastic HD does not allow students to use customized characters from their camera roll, it does enable students to put their faces on the characters. Also, unlike Puppet Pals whose characters cannot move, Toontastic characters have moving body parts.

Toontastic does not allow a direct import of photos as background from the Camera Roll. Users can, however, draw their own background which might be difficult for younger students. To customize my own background, I painted the backdrop in green, and then used Green Screen by DoInk to incorporate my chosen photo as the background. This, again, might be complicated for younger users.

Students start creating a scene by choosing a setting. Toontastic provides 9 interesting, 3-D scenes to choose from, or you can draw your own. From a high school to a pirate ship, users can scroll to several different locations within a given setting for each scene.

Each setting has a corresponding cast of characters, although you can mix and match settings and characters in any combination you wish. Students can recolor characters and their accessories to customize their stories. You can even take a selfie and impose it on any character. Students can also draw their own characters. While I find the drawing tools a little limited, the images drawn are rendered in 3D.

Toontastic is a storytelling and creative learning tool that enables you to draw, animate, and share your stories using animated characters! It is a lot like creating a puppet show. You choose characters, a background, press record, move your characters around, and tell the story.

Step 11: Special animations have been added on most characters including laser beams from robots, space sabres, fire breathing dragons and more. To activate the new animations you just tap the character.

For this assignment, I used the video/animation app, Toontastic. I had such a fun time using their premade sets, characters and layout. I really enjoyed how easy this app was to use. I used this app to do a read aloud of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It was pretty easy to use this app and I made use of the voiceover to tell the story. Although my retell is not all that great, I definitely can see myself using this in the future. I can incorporate lessons, stories, and other video ideas using Toontastic.

Hi Madi!
It is always nice to see different retells of Goldilocks and the Three Bears! Way to improvise on the pre-made settings and characters on toontastic. It is definitely a great tool for students to use when retelling stories. Great job!

Kids can learn about the art of storytelling and theater as they create their own puppet shows. It walks kids through the basics of the story arc (setup, conflict, challenge, climax, and resolution), letting them choose their scenery and characters or draw their own from scratch and then record their own dialogue and choose appropriate music. With so many options for creativity, it allows kids to be creators instead of just consumers.

Parents need to know that Toontastic 3D has all the fun features of the original, but the developer has partnered with Google, and this updated version has new scenes and 3D characters. Kids choose a scene and characters -- or design their own -- and are then given some basic guidance on constructing their own animated stories. Each scene can record up to 60 seconds of voice narration and movement. Note that it's not compatible with older devices, so review the list of compatible devices before downloading. To access all the creative options, parents need to allow the app access to the camera roll and microphone. To get inspired, kids can watch storytelling tips and see examples of what others have created in the app or on the partner website. Read the tips section of the Toontastic 3D website for a general overview of how your information is collected and shared or look through Google's general privacy policy for more details.

TOONTASTIC 3D is a creative platform for storytelling. Choose from three story options: short story, classic story, and science report. Each comes with a basic story outline -- set, conflict, challenge, climax, and resolution -- and a brief overview of what each plot point means. For each plot point, kids can use the included sets and 3D characters or design their own with simple drawing tools. Tap record to start moving characters and props around, explore the set, and narrate the story. Last step: Add an appropriate musical score. Once finished, story pieces are put together in a single video.
