Ledby director Danya Taymor, and set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their chosen family of "outsiders," who are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. The musical opened on Broadway April 11 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
For their first Monday morning performance, the full Greaser company got in on the action, performing "Grease Got a Hold". But before jumping straight into the athletic action, three of the show's Tony nominees came forward to share what the show has meant to them.
The Outsiders received 12 Tony nominations, including nods for Brody Grant, Sky Lakota-Lynch, and Joshua Boone. "It was surreal!," shared Lakota-Lynch when asked about nomination day. "I couldn't believe it. I reread the list like six times, because Steven Skybell is on there too, and I was like 'Is it the right Sky?' But it was the right Sky!"
The Broadway cast stars Grant as Ponyboy, Brent Comer as Darrel, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop, Lakota-Lynch (Dear Evan Hansen) as Johnny, Boone (Skeleton Crew) as Dallas Winston, Emma Pittman (Chicago) as Cherry Valance, Daryl Tofa (Back to the Future) as Two-Bit Mathews, Kevin William Paul as Bob Sheldon, and Dan Berry as Paul.
The ensemble features Barton Cowperthwaite, Tilly Evans-Krueger, RJ Higton, Wonza Johnson, Sean Harrison Jones, Renni Anthony Magee, Sarahgrace Mariani, Melody Rose, Josh Strobl, and Trevor Wayne. Jordan Chin, Milena J. Comeau, Henry Julin Gendron, and Victor Carrillo Tracey round out the company as swings.
The song, which sees eldest brother Darrel struggle under the strain of supporting their family following the death of their parents, is one of the highlights of the score by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine. The musical also features a book by Adam Rapp and Levine.
In Jolie's interview, she shared that it was the story's probing teenage spirit that drew her to support the production, stating that "it was written by a 16-year old girl! And she wrote a wonderful article around that time called Teenagers are Real, and she was saying that to say that 'we deal with real things. We deal with real life things as we are coming into our own, and we are facing the real world.'
"I think that now, with so much happening, there is a lot of discussion that needs to be had, and questions that need to be answered. And with this [show], there's a lot that asks the hard questions, while also focusing on finding your true self and your true voice. Trusting yourself and finding your family, fighting for something to believe in... there's a reason that this novel has been around for so long, and I am so proud of this particular group of artists who created this. I think it is very special."
The wait is almost over. Warner Bros said today that the third season of Young Justice: Outsiders will finally reach the screen on January 4 on the DC Universe streaming platform. Check out a promo for the new season above.
The animated series follows the teenage superheroes of the DC Universe as they come of age in an animated world of superpowers, supervillains and super secrets. In the new season, the team faces its greatest challenge as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a society caught in the crossfire of a genetic arms race spanning the globe and the galaxy.
Young Justice: Outsiders will continue the adventures of Dick Grayson, Superboy, Artemis and the rest of the crew as they take on bigger threats. Fans last saw the YJ team in 2013 after they foiled the invasion of Earth from the Reach (who were in bed with the villainous group, The Light.)
In 2016, a Young Justice revival was announced after streaming numbers for the first two seasons on Netflix brought attention to the property. DC Entertainment decided to bring Young Justice: Outsiders as a cornerstone of its exclusive new streaming service, DC Universe.
In Young Justice: Outsiders , the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in an animated world of super-powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. In the highly anticipated new season, the team faces its greatest challenge yet as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a society caught in the crossfire of a genetic arms race spanning the globe and the galaxy.
The DC Universe streaming service is still a new platform so the timing of when series and episodes premiere may vary, but if the Titans series is any indication the first three episodes of Young Justice: Outsiders should appear shortly after 3 a.m. EST on January 4.
The only way to watch the third season of Young Justice is through the DC Universe streaming service. The new platform will be the home of exclusive content like the aforementioned live-action Titans series, Young Justice: Outsiders and much more including comics and access purchasing merchandise.
Both series center around the young heroes of the DC Universe. Titans completed its first season last year, while Young Justice: Outsiders (which was revived on the streaming service after spending two seasons on Cartoon Network) is set to release new episodes throughout the rest of 2019. Now, it looks like both shows are massive success for DC Universe.
As Business Insider noted, Young Justice: Outsiders and Titans were the last week's two most popular streaming shows, according to Parrot Analytics' report of last week's most "in-demand" series. As the site explained, Parrot Analytics determines its global rankings by analyzing audience desire, engagement and viewership weighted against streaming and downloading interest.
According to the report, Young Justice was the most "in-demand" show, and Titans was the week's next most popular series. Other streaming hits like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Narcos: Mexico were also on the list, while Netflix's Daredevil rounded out the top seven.
After airing for two seasons on Cartoon Network, the fan-favorite Young Justice is currently in the middle of its third overall season on DC Universe. While Titans finished its first season on DC Universe last year, it premiered internationally on Netflix on Jan. 11 and has already been renewed for a second season.
