Loss of loss of look-down ability in 1.0

In 0.9, it was possible to enter cockpit mode, recenter the view so that it was well below the horizon (or anywhere else for that matter) and then switch to no-cockpit mode.  The angle chosen in cockpit mode would be retained.  This allowed you to fly with the horizon at the top of the screen, and with a much better view of the land you were flying over. Now, it's impossible to see anything nearby unless you're actually nose down.

This makes me sick with disappointment.  The inability to fly in this mode completely kills GEFS.  I flew 2000 miles of an around-the-world journey, taking in the scenery, and then the update came along.  I haven't played it since.  Is there any hope for getting this feature back?
