Dear Dr Wang,

Further to my reply dated 17 February 2020, please find below the Hospital Authority’s responses to your follow-up questions:

(1)   Depending on various factors, such as eligibility checking, handling of patients’ enquiries and patients’ clinical condition, the duration for a nurse to administer a vaccine varies from one patient to another. The Hospital Authority has no specific study on such durations.  According to paragraph 1.14 of the Code on Access to Information, the Code does not oblige departments to create a record which does not exist.

(2)   Depending on various recruitment factors, such as rank and experience of the recruited part-time nurse, the hourly rate may range from HK$95 per hour to HK$254 per hour.

If you have any questions about this reply, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Sandy Chu(Miss)

Dear Miss Chu

I have two follow-up questions

1) on average how long does it take for a nurse to administer a flu vaccine?

2) What is the hourly rate of hiring a part-time nurse with skills to administer a flu vaccine?

Many thanks for your help.

Yours sincerely

Simon Wang

Further to my reply dated 27 December 2019, please find below the Hospital Authoritys response to your questions:

(1) The Hospital Authority supports the Government Vaccination Programme and provides Seasonal Influenza Vaccination (SIV) to eligible individuals in all public hospitals and out-patient clinics every year. The respective lists of public hospitals and out-patient clinics can be accessed via:

(2) Giving injection is one of the core skills covered by a basic nursing education programme. Qualified nurses are skillful at giving injections, including flu shots, and they receive regular updates on flu vaccination to assess and educate clients who receive flu shots.

If you have any questions about this reply, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to seek information about the administration of influenza vaccination in public hospitals and clinics. Please answer my questions under the Code on Access to Information.

1) I noticed that flu shots are available in public clinics for eligible persons. Is this a new service for flu season 2019-20? Please let me know the number of public clinics and public hospitals that provide flu shot services in 2019-20 and 2018-2019.

2) According to the document https://gia.info.gov.hk/general/201903/20/P2019032000606_306565_1_1553069262774.pdf 531400 persons (65 or above) and 541500 persons (65 or above) received flu shots in 17/18 and 18/19 flu seasons. It seems that these flu shots were administered by nurses instead of doctors. What training did the nurses receive to administer flu shots? What are the reasons why nurses instead of doctors were engaged to administer flu shots?

Thanks in advance for your information.

Yours sincerely
