Dear Dr WANG
Thank you for your enquiry about the
provision of feedback in the development of secondary school students'
writing skills.
Kindly note that as feedback provision
is part of the assessment process, you may find in the following curriculum
documents (downloadable at http://www.edb.gov.hk/elecg)
relevant information in Chapter 5
"Assessment", which provides a general direction on the formulation
of an assessment policy in schools, describes different modes of assessment,
and gives suggestions on conducting assessment in schools to enhance effectiveness
of learning and teaching:
English Language Education Key Learning
Area Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 - Secondary 6) (2017)
English Language Curriculum and Assessment
Guide (Secondary 4 - 6) (2007) (with updates in November 2015)
With regard to offering feedback to
students' writing, you may find relevant information in Chapter 4 "The
Learning and Teaching of Writing" in the following curriculum document,
also downloadable at http://www.edb.gov.hk/elecg:
Supplement to the English Language
Education Key Learning Area Curriculum Guide (Secondary 1 - 3) (2018)
Assessment literacy is one of the
key emphases in the English Language Education curriculum. Resource materials
(including exemplars and resource packages) and professional development
programmes (PDPs) in this regard are provided for teachers to enhance their
professional capacity and effectiveness of learning and teaching. For details,
you may visit the following web pages:
As for local schools' practices of offering
feedback to students' writing, you may wish to know that schools may have
different practices due to different school contexts and concerns in the
planning and implementation of their school-based English Language
curriculum.
I hope the information is of use to
you.

Questions about
feedback on secondary school students' English essays
Dear Sir/Madam
I
am writing to seek information about the Education Bureau's policies and
guidelines regarding how secondary school teachers are expected to
provide feedback on their students' English essays. As the writing
skills are tested in the DSE paper 2 and 3, it is important for students
to receive feedback on their practice essays throughout the secondary school
years. Here are my questions:
1. Could you please refer me to relevant documents
and/or guidelines related to offering feedback to students' practice
essays? 2. What information does the Bureau possess about the local
schools' practices of offering feedback to students' English writing?
3. What support and resources are available from the Bureau in this regard?
Many thanks
in advance for your information.
Yours sincerely
Simon Wang, Ph.D.
