Dear Dr Wang

Thank you for your email of 16 November 2020, addressed to the Transport and Housing Bureau, which was forwarded to us on 17 November giving your views on the MTR Student Travel Scheme.

With technological advances, the MTR Corporation is committed to enhancing the travel experience for our customers through the use of new technology. As you are aware, starting from this year, primary and secondary school students can renew the “Student Status” on their Octopus electronically through the MTR Mobile without visiting an MTR Customer Service Centre and can then continue to enjoy half-price student concessionary fares. This is a much quicker, easier and more convenient process than before.

While the above arrangement is currently not available for the majority of students of universities and other tertiary institutions for first-time and renewal applications, the Corporation will continue to explore ways to enhance the functions of the electronic platform so that we can accept applications and verification from such applicants in the future.

We hope this clarifies the current situation. Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to write to us.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sir/Madam

I have to reply to MTR via Transport and Housing Bureau because, despite my repeated requests, MTR staff refused to communicate with me directly via email. This corporation’s public relation strategies need some review.

It is regrettable that the MTR merely restated the fact that it does not support online application for Student Octopus cards without acknowledging it is SHAME for the corporation to waste so much time of university students. Nor did it lay out any plan to address this issue. This is disappointing and I’d like whether the bureau plans to do anything about it.

Given that the HKSAR government is a shareholder of MTR I’d like to know if THB has any officers sitting on the Board of Directors of MTR or involved in the management of the company. If so may I have the names of such officers? I’ll follow up this issue with Legislative Council as well.

Yours sincerely
Simon Wang
