Dear Joaquin Matres,
We are excited that you are joining us for Phot1x Silicon Photonics Design, Fabrication and Data Analysis, offered by The University of British Columbia through edX. The course officially begins Tuesday, January 15th. Note that edX courses use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) for due dates and release times.
To help us understand your background, we would appreciate it if you could take this short pre-course survey (link).
Navigating the course:
- The contents of the course are found in the “Course” tab (videos are pre-recorded).
- Portions of the textbook are available in the “Textbook” tab.
- If you have any questions, please post in the Discussion forum, by clicking on the “Discussion” tab, then New Post, and then selecting Post Type = Question.
- We are also planning for Live Q&A sessions; join us live for discussions.
Before we jump into Week 1, you may start these activities:
- Introduction: includes a course overview, syllabus, schedule, and project description. There are several videos on “What is Silicon Photonics?” including industry and academic research.
- Software installation: We have provided software download, installation, and license access instructions. Commercial tools are available for the duration of the course. Please note that the commercial tool vendors require that you register with them to access their software, and we request that you do so as soon as possible as it may take a few days to process (export control checks).
Note that Week 1 is the heaviest in this course, in terms of workload. If you have limited time, I suggest you only install Lumerical for now and aim to complete the three units, "Waveguides", "Waveguide modelling - Lumerical MODE", and "YBranch", as these are the main two things that we will use in Week 2 to model the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer.
We invite you to join our Silicon Photonics LinkedIn page, our Facebook page, and our SiEPIC Mailing List – where we share news relating to Silicon Photonics workshops and courses. We also created a LinkedIn sub-group page during a previous course as many students wanted a way to keep in touch and network. Information about the SiEPIC program can be found on our www.siepic.ca web page.
Finally, we would be grateful if you could share with your colleagues that you are taking this course, via LinkedIn (you can Repost), Facebook, or otherwise.
If you have any questions, please post in the Discussion forum, by clicking on the “Discussion” tab, or within each Section.
Again, welcome to the course, and thank you for joining.
regards,
Lukas Chrostowski
