Why do we use Google in the name of our group?

Because "Google Developer Groups (GDGs) are for developers who are interested in Google's developer technology."
And yes - we are independent groups. Our activities and the opinions should in no way be linked to Google, the corporation.

Hello Everyone,

Communities are launched by volunteers who are passionates about something, and we, as GDG leads, we are passionates about Google technologies, Communities don't depend to anyone even to organizers ( GDG Leads in our case) and this what distinguish it from companies or other organizations, GDGs are independents from Google, but Google is the main partner and it help the community to grow and to be more connected.

What we may get as return, is what we are learning here from the DevRel & Outreach team and from each other, moreover  helping folks in our countries / regions to discover and master Google technologies is something that i'm personally proud of and i think it's the case for everyone here.

I would also add "Learning in a group with real people". That is what I am getting back by organizing such a group.

That's great answer, thank you, Dan. As Joshua said, someone may just love to do this kind of activity and don't count on return at all. We are all volunteers any way and just want to get  our community better.

As Joshua said, I am a GDG organizer for the same reason I am a mentor to a FIRST Robotics team and I have been involved with Code for America: I like to stay in touch with the latest technologies, I like the opportunity to try out new things, and I like to share my knowledge with others. In return, I like to think I am helping to make my community better and I learn from the people I interact with. That's all the reason I need. I'd do it even without the support Google gives me and the occasional swag I may get from Google - those are just nice bonuses. One of the reasons I tend to favor Google services and tools is that Google does try to support their development community, keep open dialog with us, and they respond to feedback. What more reason would you need?

I believe the intention of the person is that why would a group leader spend time and energy to promote google name without direct benefit from google? I would say that GDG leaders must see the continuous innovation and creation from the No. 1 technology company, agree with its ideology, and trust that team with google would create potential benefit for the local developer community. I would really be interested to hear initiatives from other group leaders. Thank you very much.

There is a direct link http://developers.google.com/groups :)

You also have a direct link to Van, Adrian and your regional lead.

GDGs main focus is Google Developer technologies, and because Google offers so many it is easy to create the umbrella.

Similar to Adobe user groups, no direct affiliation with adobe, but major support.

It is different than other user groups since there is a company behind the name opposed to a specific product, like Java or python user groups.

Guess just one more thing that makes GDGs so special.

"Passion" for Google's developer technologies can lead us to do crazy things, not everyone can feel this but we do.
We may learn a lot, gain a huge experience, have the chance to meet really cool people, but it still doesn't matter what we get in return, since what really matter is that we are doing what we love, share what we know, and help those who want to learn about Google's developer technologies; and believe me, the moment when you see the smile on people's faces after a CodeLab or a Devfest you'll feel better than getting paid for a job. I felt that.

My answer at GDG DevFest Waterloo, during a panel discussion between
the participating GDG leads, was roughly:

a) Google launches and supports many of the most interesting and
useful open source software development frameworks and programming
languages (Android, Go, Dart, AngularJS, Chromium, HTML5, schema.org,
Freebase...), which is a great fit for my own long-standing passion
for using, promoting, and developing open source software.

b) I work at a university with a heavily academic-focused computer
science program, and have seen many of the students come out with a
degree but no practical experience with software development; so
starting a GDG was a way to combine my personal interest in open
source & my desire to build a meet-up culture in our area with the
hopes of also helping expose interested students to more real-world
software development. And it is working; we're starting to have a mix
of attendees from local industry as well as university students who
are sharing their experiences and perspectives, and that's something
that I hope flourishes.

c) Bluntly speaking, the brand "Google" carries instant recognition
factor with developers and has a positive cachet that helps with
marketing the events and building that meet-up culture. And given all
of the development technology that falls under the Google umbrella, we
have a huge amount of latitude to cover topics of interest for years
to come. (And given the pace of development and innovation at Google,
we're likely to have an ever-expanding set of topics to try and keep
up with!)

All of this coincides pretty nicely with the description of our group
that we promote on our website, G+ pages, and mailing list: "Google
Developers Group (GDG) Sudbury organizes meetings focused on
development efforts such as Android, HTML5, RDFa Lite and microdata,
and other open source, open web, open data subjects."
