Hi guys

I hope you are well. I think the date still allows me to wish you a Happy New Year!

I'll be writing very soon with details of our next Meet a Mentor events - I just have a couple of details to confirm first.  Today I'm writing because we've had a request from one of our most actively supportive University lecturers, Dr Steffen Zschaler at Kings College London, for industry speakers.

I'm sure that some of our GDC Meet a Mentor group will already be in contact with Steffen, but we thought it was worth sharing some details to see if anyone else would like to get involved. In a nutshell, Steffen likes to start as many of his lectures to first year students as he can with a 10-15 minute talk from an experienced developer/engineer about what it's like working in the industry today. He's looking for personal stories, such as:

What it's like to work as X in the industry (where X could be a specific kind of developer (freelance, small company, big company, ...) or a specific role (tester, UX expert, software engineer, programmer, …)

A cool development approach or technology (though consider that they are first-year students) and how it impacts life as a developer

"What I wish I had known when I was a student”

His aim is to give the students as much of a sense of the real world as possible, so that from the beginning they look at their studies with a realistic eye on their future career. He would welcome speakers from any field of IT and from large international companies through to two person start ups so the students get as wide a range of speakers as possible. It's also an opportunity for people in the industry to begin to meet the new intake of Computer Science students,

This fits in really well with the work we do through the Graduate Developer Community Meet a Mentor scheme, so we are keen to help if possible.

I don't have any further details or any dates, but Steffen will be happy to answer any questions. If you'd be interested to know more please let me know directly, and I'll pass Steffen your email address. If you could add the name of your current company, this would be a huge help!

Many thanks,

Maggie

Just had a brief read of this and I'd be interested in speaking, depending on when it is! I'm currently a developer at Geneity.

Hi Maggie

I'm potentially interested, obviously depending on date/time. I'm a self-employed Technical Architect, currently consulting at the Ministry of Justice, a dotcom1 survivor, and serial startup builder

Hi Maggie,

I'd be happy to help out. My career path as a Software Developer has been varied, across small startups through to large consultancies, and I'd be happy to speak about all of these experiences.

Hi Maggie, I'd be happy to get involved in this - but don't have your direct email - so hopefully this will find its way to you.

I'm co-founder of a company called YunoJuno, and have approx. 20 years development behind me - large companies, small startups, product companies and consulting.
