Hi guys,

Last week I was introduced to an awesome GDC member called Joe Nash, who in turn introduced me to something called Major League Hacking, which seems to have similar principles to the GDC. If you couldn’t tell from the name, it’s an American concept, in which students get points for attending hackathons and getting more involved in the community - awesome!

It’s really taking off and is something I feel we should definitely be supporting. They are running a series of hackathons and would like our help to get some mentors for one event in particular. I suggested the idea of running a Meet a Mentor session at the event and Joe was keen so we’re going to see what we can do, but in the least we’d like to try and get some interesting mentors that can get down to the event on October 4th or 5th.

The site for launch is here: http://launch.mlh.io/ It's held in the Bloomberg European Headquarters, and they are our currently only listed sponsor, but we will also be supported by at least PayPal, Twilio and SendGrid, though by the time the event comes round this number will likely increase.

I’d appreciate if you could let me know if you’d be potentially interested in:

a) Helping out as a mentor and if so what times could you get there for? - the event runs across both days, but even if you could get along for the morning or afternoon that would be great.
b) Actually running a meet a mentor event if so what time would work for you?

If you are interested I’ll run some introductions from there.

Cheers,
Barry

Sounds like a really nice initiative Barry.

I would love to help. I'm available on both 4th and 5th October and would be happy to run an event as well, if required.

Let me know how I can help and we can take it from there.

Cheers,
Kaushik

Hi Barry,

Put me down for the 4th of October, I'm happy to spend the day. I'lln also make time to get to some meet the mentor sessions before then, if any run.

Phil.

Excellent thanks Phil and thanks Kaushik.

Any other questions or thoughts from anyone on getting involved please do let me know. I know it’s quite far off but I’d love to get 5-10 people confirmed from the MaM group if that’s possible.

Kind regards,
Barry

Hi Barry,

I can be a mentor for the MaM on the 4th, possibly the 5th. Happy to spend a day as mentor too.

I'd love to help out on the afternoon of either xor both days!

I typically expect to be at a MaM event a few times in Oct or Nov - what
is involved in running an event, how much more time would I need to
allocate?

Hello Barry,

I am planning to go to at least the first "Major League Hacking" event in London, hopefully to several others too.  I'd be happy to help out with mentoring at these events

I've also asked my company if we can sponsor some of these events.  Fingers crossed.

Thanks
John.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick shout out to see if we have any female developers who would like to mentor at the below event?

Cheers,

Anj

Hi Anji,
As that's a weekend I think I could finally make it to a MaM :)
Ideally in the afternoon on one of the days. Do you already have any details how the mentor sessions will be run do that I could book it in my calendar?

Hey Anji,

I can't do that weekend, but if you're ever in need of female devs in the future please feel free to ping me.
