Hi guys

I hope 2016 has made a good start for you. February already...

I have just confirmed a date for the next Meet A Mentor session (booked at Kings College on 2 March) so this seems like a good time to update you on the mentoring work going on in and around the GDC!

First then - the Meet a Mentor sessions. Anji Conroy will set up a Doodle poll for the Kings event in the next few days and send you the link, and I am also working with the universities to fix a date for the end of this term at Queen Mary and an extra event next term at UCL. There is no need to reply to this email but please do keep a look out for the polls and sign up if you can take part. As always, we'd be hoping for a wide range of mentors - lots of different backgrounds and experiences - so that all the students' questions can be answered.

Thank you to everyone who has given feedback on previous Meet a Mentor events. Everything that has been mentioned has been taken into consideration to make sure we continually improve the events.

There is more to mentoring than the Meet a Mentor events of course - even though these events remain a cornerstone of our mentoring strategy.

So far this year we have already had offers of one-to-one mentoring for someone moving to software development from a career in finance. We also had a fantastic response to the request for speakers to first year students at Kings. Huge thanks to all those who offered their help. I’ll be back with similar requests throughout the coming months, I am sure. There are also plans in place within the London Java Community for some events for new developers and I’ll write to you separately about that as this email is in danger of becoming too long.

Can I finish by saying how grateful we are for all the offers of help with mentoring. I'm particularly grateful when people take the time to give me their thoughts on ways in which we can improve the events we run to help students and people new to the industry. I'm also always happy to hear ideas about new events that we haven't thought of yet, so please always feel free to email me directly. Thank you for your time and commitment!

Best wishes

Maggie
