Does anyone have picture and video recovery software.

I purchased a new Pc from Domain and got a new external 2 Terabite harddrive with it.

It failed and wants me to reformat.
Some bit rot on the corupted drive.
Seeking someone who has the software for PC.
Purchase of this software starts at $70.

If the drive shows up in your device manager / explorer / whatever then  it's possible to run a free tool called photorec that will recover most documents.

If the drive doesn't show up at all then it's much harder to recover, and usually software solutions wont work. You can try putting the drive in a new enclosure or plugging it directly into a PC.

This free tool can be run from linux or many of the available linux live cd's out there.

run spinrite over it immediately.

If its hard drive corruption it might fix it, if its (windows) filesystem corruption it probably will fix it, if you muck around with it in its current state then be very careful as anything can start wiping over the old data.

CrystalDiskInfo is a good start, because it will basically tell you if the HD "SMART" data is reporting any internal errors instantly.  If the SMART data is all clean, then it's some logical problem, and once you've recovered the data, you can just reformat the drive and safely keep using it.  If SMART reports errors, then replace the drive once you get your data back!  (Probably still under warranty??)

spinrite does smart, as well as a number of comprehensive checks that go way beyond smart.

There are plenty of success stories, unfortunately it has been unable to fix any of my drives when needed (none of them windows based which I think was the issue), but I still trust the product... https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

I used to use it, but stopped because I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with a USB drive.  Now I just monitor for SMART errors and bin drives which start to fail before the OS even notices.  I also use a great bit of software called DisPARITY which protects my 6 media drives from single drive failures.  Have managed to avoid data loss for 10 years so far, even with 5 drive failures. :-)

Not sure when they added support but I know you can def do USB drives with it, at least now anyway :)

Got input. The shows up but wants to be formated.
Will look at the software first.
Also have the option to recover depleted files from the camera SD card if all fails.

I tried, but they all do the same. You can download and scan, but you know the drill.
When it comes to save you need to give out your email and then choose how much to pay from the standard and pro version.
Luck I found DMDE 3.0.6.648 that had found 546 jpeg files and 270 mov files.
Amazing.
All the others had found 88 movies max.
This software is more fiddly to use. But it seems to work.
Just takes hours.

Glad you got some of your data back!

For what it's worth, all data I care about is replicated between two (off-site) machines using Bittorrent Sync, and all my Photos and my "My Documents" folder are additionally backed up using google drive.  All 10TB of movies/tv at home are protected using "Disparity" a great free tool allowing for cheap redundancy based backup for large collections of mainly read-only data.

I'd be interested to hear how other people in the group are protecting their important data!

I was up late only to discover from all that data I acually got only 2 photos.
No video at all. The program had split up the sound file and video.

Will keep persevering in due cause.

Yeah it's usually actually very complicated to recover data off hard-drives or SD cards, most commercial data recovery services start from about $3000 and require you to send you hard-drive to Switzerland or similar and wait a few months for the experts to do the recovery! So backups are very important if you have any data you really don't want to lose!

My methods of backup:
I don't have much internet speed or capacity so I don't use cloud backups like DropBox or Google Drive much. Instead I wrote a simple Linux script to backup nearly my whole computer to my USB3 external hard-drive using the Linux "rsync" tool (so it only transfers data that I actually changed recently). There are ways to do full system backups even while you're still using your system, but to keep things simple & reliable, before I go to bed at night I just reboot into a separate Linux partition on my computer and plug in my USB3 external hard disk and run my script to copy nearly all my files onto the external hard drive and automatically shutdown my computer when it's finished. Even though I say it's a "script", it's really just running the command "sudo rsync -av SRC DST" on each of my hard-disk partitions that I want to backup, so it's quite basic.

For the documents I might want to use remotely, I was using Dropbox some years ago until it became known that Dropbox is partly run by US politicians, so that threw me (and many computer geeks!) off Dropbox forever. Now I use Google Drive instead, and I encrypt most of my files first before uploading it to Google Drive. I use "encfs" in Linux with a script that runs automatically twice a day, so that my important files are automatically encrypted then uploaded to Google Drive regularly. The annoying part is that any device that wants to access those files needs to be able to not just access files off Google Drive, but also be able to decrypt them. So for "encfs", that basically means you need a rooted Android phone if you want instant seemless access to your encrypted files in the cloud. If you aren't so worried about companies & govts & hackers looking at your data, then don't worry about encryption, but I do recommend Google Drive over DropBox just because Google Drive has much larger storage.

Everyday important data is backed up using google drive.

Absolute important data is backed up using arq (mac software) which does pre-internet encryption and uploads at the moment to google storage, used to be s3 glacier until the google storage became just as cheap as glacier.

I have lost about 3 years of photo's on a nas device I had that died, data is still sitting on s3 glacier (about 50GB worth) but have not had the energy to start restoring. Just knowing its there and can get it back is very very comforting. Other stuff I lost was a bunch of video files and podcasts, all of which I can easily download again or simply not bother about (how many times am I going to listen to early mac break weekly episodes?)

Not the strongest regime, but it is a compromise to my ability to bring out OCD and go overboard!
