I visited that hackerspace in Sydney a few times, it's pretty decent, but I was really surprised that there was only 1 hackerspace in all of Sydney (considering half of Sydney would have to drive around 1 hour each way to get there!), and it was only a little bigger & better than the Gold Coast TechSpace, and it was tiny compared to the Brisbane hackerspace! Sydney also has an RPi group for software people, but even that one only meets up once per month.

I visit Sydney on a regular basis and had the same experience Some are open on a random basis. Brisbane seems to be the most vibrant hacker space (haven't been to The Melbourne one though)
Have been to Adelaide hacker space which had similar attendance to Gold Coast Techspace. When Steve was on Embbed podcast they were surprised there was a hackerspace for 1/2 million population city
Yet there are more popping up along the east coast in smaller population centres

Great to checkout and see what others are doing but remember that: 'size doesn't count'.

Its the people, enthusiasm and willingness to share knowledge that make up a great Techspace.

Gold Coast has some good numbers and no doubt will keep growing as there are still plenty of people out there who want to learn more but don't know where to go.

Keep up the good work,
Ronald

I've been to many hackerspaces - I believe GC has a lot that some of the other (much better equipped) hackerspaces have. We have a great community spirit and fellowship.

Type there... I meant to say "hackerspaces don't have."

Yeah for sure there can't be too many hackerspaces around the world with their own pick & place machine! GCTS seems pretty good, all things considered.

For roughly a year now I've been on the lookout for people that might be interested in electronics in the Northern Rivers area, that are kinda too far to reach the GCTS, and so far besides the large numbers of web developers in the region, I've only met an old electronics engineer that is experienced but not too keen to do side projects, a few mechanical engineers, and a recent Mechatronics graduate that is keen to find interesting work but doesn't have much practical experience. So obviously Byron area is too small for its own hackerspace, and I'm guessing there's no hackerspace anywhere between Gold Coast to Newcastle! I'm just ordering parts for my own home lab now so I can get the few people mentioned above to come make use of my home lab if they want to collaborate.

There is one starting up in Coff's Harbour - but I think GC is
probably nearer for you.

One day I dream of moving to Northern Rivers area for somewhere a bit
more peaceful - when that happens we'll start one up down there
Shervin - I think it's a fine spot.

In the meantime - perhaps we should try and organise a regular social
Google Hangout or something so people who are a bit further away can
keep in touch.

Steve, good idea.

Jim, I know there's a group of Web developers in Tweed, is that the web developers group or it's for electronics & general technology?

Cheers,
Shervin Emami.

Jim is talking about TechSpace Tweed - our sister site.

http://techspacetweed.com/

It's a bit of a different setup to us though in that Elisa (that owns
the space) doesn't not publicly advertise the meetups as it's also her
place of business and she wanted to keep it a small crowd.

I'm sure Jim can give you the details and invite your properly if you
wanted to go.

Hi Shervin

It’s not the web developers group.

Here’s the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/onespacetweed/

and here’s the website: http://techspacetweed.com.

Thanks guys, yeah I'll check out the Tweed techspace, I'm considering moving a bit north to Ocean Shores in a few months time and that could be a more acceptable distance :-)

Cheers,
Shervin Emami.

oo, everyone's talking about Techspace Tweed, that's nice.

"One Space" is the building, inside the building we have "Tweed Heads Coworking" upstairs, and "Techspace Tweed" downstairs.

Anyone is welcome to join us, I don't advertise because I let people "discover us" thereby self-filtering to those who put some effort into finding a local tech group and winnowing out the 'casual interest' people.

Next meetup is this Thursday evening 5:30pm.

I be in Sydney from tomorrow and check two of them out.
I also visit my friend Sagar who is doing really well with his website and kit sales. All after work.

Thanks Elisa, I'll try to come to this week's meeting but I'm doing a business trip to Melbourne this week so I might be too tired and postpone till the next one in 2 weeks. Thanks!

When I search under Makerspace instead of Hackerspace I find even more.
There is a Makerspace in Marrickville.

If anyone plans to go to Sydney then it may be a good time to come
when the maker fair is on.
