adding a printer to chromebook

I have a Hisense Chromebook and just purchased a Pixma iP2820 Canon printer..it was super cheap b/c I only need it for small jobs...it's not even wireless. I attached my USB cord from my chromebook to my printer and followed the instructions (there is no CD drive in the chromebook so it said to manually go to canon.com/ijsetup)...so i did this and it makes sense to what i'm supposed to do but when i go to "add a classic printer"..it just keeps going around in circles and I end up back at the beginning and it never 'finds' my printer to add. Can anyone help me with this?

This thread should explain the problem. Obviously not everything there is relevant to you but I am sure you can figure out what is.
