Hi,

I am using Windows 7, and Windows 8.1, and in both my systems I have Lexmark Universal PCL and HP Universal drivers installed.
Now with Google Chrome Version 35.0.1916.114, after registering the drivers when I open Google Cloud Print dialog, I am not getting the "Advanced printing..." option which shows all the advanced driver features for the  selected registered driver.

However, in previous version 34.0.1847.116., this is working fine.

Is there any change made in this release of Chrome ( or Cloud printing beta ) which caused this issue. Is it already being tracked by any issue ?

I am complete stuck and can not print with custom driver features until this issue is resolved for Chrome.
Any Help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Soumik

35 uses Spooler API instead of Print Ticket API
It provides only basic options, but crash drivers less frequently.

you can fallback to older approach using regedit
1. open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
2. Find value with chrome.exe --type=service
3. edit and append --enable-cloud-print-xps --no-service-autorun
4. reboot computer

Thanks a lot Vitaly !. It really worked.

But could you please let know ehy this change is made on 35.
As you have mentioned that "but crash drivers less frequently.", do you mean that for this change in 35, our print drivers are crashing someway ?
All I am trying to understand is if we can find out who is causing the problem, Chrome or Print driver ?

Thanks again,
Soumik

It's not Lexmark specific. There is variety of various driver version from different manufacturers that just crash, when we try to get printer capabilities using XPS.
So we decided to switch to older API to improve stability.

Thanks Vitaly. So, right now the problem we are facing is that with latest chrome, the advanced options are not there. As you have mentioned that to improve stability google has decided to switch to older API , So curious to know what is the plan now ? Will it be kept like this and the advanced printing features will no longer exposed in Cloud Print UI ?

We have developed a lot of things for our advanced printing features for our customers, and they will use the latest chromes. So, we are very much eager to know what will be the future road map on this ? Will it be like this or this issue will be fixed.

Thanks,
Soumik

Advanced Features are gone only for classic printers connected using windows.
Cloud Ready printers should work as before.

Maybe we should consider some simple way to get old behavior, if stability is OK for user and advanced options are need.

We also received a number of complaints from our users that experienced printing from different trays etc.
It would be great if there would be a notice in advance if such a drastic change is planned.

Hi Daniel,

The good news is that the Advanced printing option is going to be back from Chrome release 37. The option is under Chrome flag and it is called "Enable XPS is Google Cloud Print" which needs to be enabled from chrome and then your users need to re-register the existing printers to Google Cloud Print to get it work properly.

Thanks,
Soumik

Hi Soumik,

I am experiencing the same issues with google cloud printing and a lack of advanced options as well as A3 printing not working and I have a corporate client who has moved to chromebooks and cloud printing.

Are you able to clarify that the advanced printing options you say will be be back in Chrome release 37, will be all the features you previously listed.  Also, do you have any idea when chrome release 37 will be released?

Many Thanks

Reuben

Hi Vitaly,

I have installed the cloud print service (as a service) on a Windows 8.1 workstation and connected a printer as a classic printer.   I am unable to find the registry string to fallback to the older approach.  Does it change if I have installed it as a service?

Please let me know.

Thanks

Hi Reuben,

The no. of advanced features exposed in Google Cloud Printing - Advanced printing for classic printers depend on the print drivers your are using, if that driver supports these many features then it should be exposed. It depends on that individual hardware vendor is implementing their print driver for google cloud printing.

I have tested this from beta dev release of 37 and found that advanced printing options back .  I do not have exact information on when 37 will be released officially. I asked this information from Google Support, and they said it will not be before ~8-10 weeks. I do not have this data.

If anyone from Google team can provide this information it would be great.

Thanks,
Soumik

Many Thanks for the quick reply Soumik,

This makes things slightly more complex - the advanced options depend on getting release 37 of chrome as well as the hardware vendors drivers being tailored to google cloud printing?  Can I ask what driver you found worked best - PCL6/5 etc?

I have a Konica C364 I am trying to get working with staples etc...

Thanks

If your driver of Konica C364 was working previously , then you should  not be worried about. The same driver should work fine with Chrome release 37 as well.

I have a Canon MX925 printer. I don't get an option to choose Monochrome printing in Chrome. I have a similar issue with Cloud Print except, unlike in Chrome, in Cloud Print, an option appears to select Colour but it gives me no Monochrome option.

This is a pretty basis function that is important to most users (because Colour printing is more expensive than Monochrome).

I am forced to use Microsoft browser!
