Hello,

A little background: I’ve been an I.T. network engineer for almost 20 years now ... the last 7 years I have worked as an independent consultant. Ive designed and installed, from scratch, Windows and Linux based networks, Asterisk VOIP phone systems ... numerous Cisco routers, switches and firewalls ... I’ve written software ... I’ve written database apps for mobile devices ... I’ve just about done it all, and I understand I.T. and everything related to it quite well.

This problem, has been kicking my butt for several hours now. I’ve ensured that my firmware is the most recent version, and I’ve contacted Brother on this issue. They, of course, tell me to contact Google ...

Here’s where I’m at:

Printer model: Brother HL-5470DW

Firmware:
Firmware Version: 1.16
Sub Firmware Version: 1.04

I have configured SUCCESSFULLY, email notifications using the same google account with 2-step verification with an application password that was generated for that task. Email notifications work FLAWLESSLY - so I know the printer can authenticate to a google account and use it. HOWEVER, when I use an app password with cloud print, I always get ‘INTERNAL ERROR’ - whatever that means.

I tried a different google account that is registered under my own domain which does NOT have 2-step enabled, and I get the same error.
I DISABLED 2-step verification on my main gmail.com account, and I still get the same error, and yes, I made sure to change the password to the main account PW instead of the app password. In fact, I tried entering the wrong password, and the error is different ... the error when I use the wrong password says “Account Verification Error” ... but when I use the right password, it says “INTERNAL ERROR”.

the account I’m trying to use is: sims...@gmail.com

Can someone offer me some insight into trouble shooting this further?

Thank you,

Mike Sims

I am experiencing the same issue as Mike Sims in regards to Internal Error when attempting to use my Gmail account to log into the printer, thus enabling the printer to be found.

The printer and OS info is:

Brother HL-5470DW
Firmware 1.17 / 1.04

Chrome OS / HP Chromebook
Version 37.0.2062.119 (64-bit)
Platform 5978.80.0 (Official Build) stable-channel falco
Firmware Google_Falco.4389.78.0

The only way I was able to log into the printer was to create another Google Account. I then shared the printer with my preferred Gmail account (as in the real account).

I am NOT a computer scientist but it would appear that the issue has to do with my preferred Google account being tied to a previous Firmware.

PLEASE work with Brother to permit firmware upgrades with Chrome OS. It makes ZERO sense that I need to use Windows or Mac OS to upgrade the firmware that enables GOOGLE Cloud Print.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mike...did you ever get anything to work?  I've worked with Google Ninjas and Brother support and nobody can figure it out.  I have three of the same Brother printer (a different model from yours) at two different school locations and I get the same errors.  I've tried a non domain specific email, my person, on and on.  The firmware is updated, the date and time are correct, I even had a heart to heart talk with the printer.  I am very frustrated!

Please see my comment.

Create a new Gmail account.
Login to printer.
Share with your main account.
Enjoy the frustration of having an unnecessary account.

Firmware update fixed it on both printers for me. I believe the latest version is 1.18. That did the trick instantly.

The latest firmware is version 1.18. Update to that and you'll be fine. I had the same issue that you mention.

I can verify that updating to the latest firmware fixed this issue on my MFC-8710DW as well.

I have two of the HL-5400DN printers with the latest firmware (1.20) and I am still not able to get them connected to my Google Apps account. It works with a regular Gmail account but only if "allow less secure apps" is enabled. This option does not exist for Google Apps accounts so I am pretty sure that's where the problem lies. I have read that OAuth 2.0 is required on Brother's side to make this work. I contacted Brother tech support but after numerous emails I ended up with a "this doesn't work" from them. Great customer service!

If anyone knows of a work around I would be very interested since I am not willing to set up some random Gmail account just to share printers.

I have multiple printers 8710DW that also have the same issue.  I've ended up just making a desktop into a print server.  It's a very easy work around.  Check here   https://support.google.com/a/answer/3179170?hl=en

How were you able to update the firmware? I've got a 5470 that has firmware 1.16. However, when I run Brother's firmware update utility, it does not show up in the list of printers available for update.

I set up the printer as an IP printer on my local workstation, then the tool found it and was able to update the firmware.

I'm having similar problems. I'm trying to set-up Google Cloud Print on my Brother MFC-J5910dw. I have been at this for almost two hours and can't seem to figure it out. When I attempt to log in to Google Cloud Print I receive an error that says Internal Error. The firmware on the printer is up to date with the most recent version. If I disable my "Access for less secure apps" setting on Google I get an Authentication error. I have contacted Brother support as well.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!
