Hi,

I just arrived on the Gold Coast from the UK and wondered if this
group was still active? I've been writing Java software for 8 years
but I'm also interested in iPhone and Android development, alternative
JVM languages and technology in general. Just looking for some like
minded people to get to know.

Craig.

Hi Craig,

There isn't a great deal of traffic via the group, but I am certainly
still interesting in what goes on.

Hi Craig

GCJUG never actually met - I set the email group up a while back to try and get something happening. There are a few Java people on the Gold Coast - but a lot that I know commute up to Brisbane (including me).

Most of my local groups are now on meetup and there a few you might be interested in

Barcamp (Gold Coast event happening 6th March) - http://meetup.com/barcampqld
Groovy Grails Queensland (next meeting 25th Jan... very active little community) - http://meetup.com/groovygrailsqld
Open Source Gold Coast (including GCLUG) - http://www.meetup.com/open-source-gold-coast

I also have some groups on LinkedIn if you are on there.

Definitely come to the Barcamp if you are looking for jobs etc - or drop me a mail - st...@refactor.com.au is my business address. I'm from UK too - been here 10 years. I know how it can be in a new place getting into a good network of people.

Steve

Thanks Steve.

Sounds like you've got your hands full!

I'm taking a bit of time off to help get the family settled but I plan
to start looking for work after the Australia day celebrations so any
help making useful contacts would be greatly appreciated! We chose to
live on the Gold Coast (currently in Hope Island) so that I could
commute into Brisbane for work.

I did a little bit of Groovy scripting a few years back but have never
done any Grails programming (mostly for the lack of time and a good
trial project rather than lack of interest). I've done a lot of Java
desktop development and I've been watching Griffon with interest, so
I'll try and come along to the Grails meet up to say hello.

Hope to meet you soon,

Craig.

Maybe this can be the catalyst to actually get together - I can't really do the daytime at the moment - but the rest of you are welcome to do something.

I would recommend anyone that can get to Brisbane to come to GGQ on 25th Jan and of course Barcamp gold coast on 6th March. Will be plenty of java people at both.

I'm probably not the one to ask as I currently don't work on Gold Coast - commute to Brisbane. Maybe some of the other Gold Coast java people might be able to help you out. I know Java jobs on the coast seem to be quite rare... mostly PHP and .net here.

Make sure you come to http://meetup.com/barcampqld on March 6th - you might meet some people there. We always have a job board on the wall.

Hi Marcelo,

I know of a few places that do Java development on the Gold Coast. The
biggest of them all is the IBM Tivoli development centre at Southport.
They do a lot of varied stuff there and I bet a reasonable amount of
Java is part of it.

IBM are usually looking for people - I know 1 person that works there - she joined them as a graduate and is doing Java. It's usually only permanent jobs though - so I've never really looked into it seriously for myself.

You can search for openings on their careers website which is pretty easy to find from main IBM page.

Good employer though... my first IT job was at IBM in the UK at IBM Warwick - they certainly look after you, or at least they did way back in the day I worked there!

I saw some job ads this morning on seek.com.au Guvera.com are hiring a
number of positions, one of which is a Java developer. According to
the ad they are based at Robina, near RTC.
