It must be a real challenge to shoot an arrow through the hole of 12
axes and have to string the bow yourself. I knew immediatly that
Odysseus was going to be able to do it and he did then it surprise me
when he shot the suitor. Odysseus showed his revenge when shot him and
i don't think that will be the last of his revenge. It was also a real
shock when he reveiled himself to them all and they didn't know what
to do.

Book 21: If Penelope was loyal to Odysseus all along, why would'nt she
just have the suitors leave and take Odysseus back instead of going
through the trouble of all the suitors trying to complete the 12 axes?

Book 22:Why does Odysseus freak out on the suitors when he is then one
who cheated on Penelope?

In book 21 the suitors are trying to shoot the arrows through the ax
heads so they will get to wed Penelope. None of them are successful
until Odysseus tries. He easily shoots through them all and the
suitors are not very happy.

In book 22 Odysseus reveals himself to the suitors and begins to kill
them all with the help of Telemachus, the swineherd, and one other
guy. He only spares two men, who had not been there in suit of
Penelope. They also kill the maids that had gone against Odysseus and
been with the suitors while he was gone.

I knew Odysseus was going to be able to shoot through all of the axes
because of the old PBS show "Wishbone"
but what surprised me was how the soutiors didn't back down and see
how justifiably upset Odysseus was at the way they treated his house,
possesions, and his servents. Book 21 was the set up for the suitros
downfall and all of book 22 was the battle for justice and the
cleaning of the house and disposal of the unfaithful servents.

The way in which the suitor are dealt with seems excessively brutal. I
know Odysseus was upset that they took advantage of his wealth and
family, but they didn't deserve to die. Some of the people begging for
mercy could have been telling the truth.

well in book 21 they are having the competition of shooting the arrow
through a hole of 12 axes. i have come to understand that this is a
test penelope is doing because she isn't sure if the gods are tricking
her or not. at the end of the chapter odysseus ends up winning the
competition with ease.
in book 22 Odysseus and Telemachus team up and start killing all the
suitors. they end up saving 2 priest and that was all. after that they
gathered all the unfaithfull servant women had them clean the blood
and then telemachus hung them all and they were executed.

book 22
Odysseus is a very strong character and he shows all of his anger and
revenge when he kills almost all the suitors when he goes on a killing
rampage. I also think it doesn't sure his hero side very well when he
kills the women as well later on and his son has them hanged. This is
a very bloody chapter, but shows he's a good warrior.

Book 21- Everyone is trying to win Penelope, but Odysseus is still
married to her, why does he even have to do the arrow thing?
Book 22 - Odysseus & Telechamus attack the suitors for trying to get
with Penelope & trashing their house, and Odysseus makes the women

The archery contest begins in book 21. Penelope brings out Odysseus'
old, unstrung bow, and the suiters try to string it. They fail in
their attempts and decide to grease the bow in order to loosen it up.
A couple of the suiters try and string the bow this time, but they
fail yet again. At this, Odysseus leaves the courtyard to talk to two
of his most trusted servants. One of them is Eumaeus, his swineherd,
and the other is his cowherd, Philoetius. The cowherd is unaware of
Odysseus' true identity and is grateful when he finally discovers that
he has returned. Odysseus asks these two to help him when he fights
the suiters, they agree, and they go back inside the courtyard.

Inside the courtyard, O. declares that he will attempt to string the
bow and is met with vigorous protest from the suiters. Despite this,
Penelope and Telemachus agree to let Odysseus have a go at it. Then
Telemachus asks his mother to leave the courtyard along with all the
other women. After they have left Odysseus strings the bow with ease
and shoots an arrow effortlessly though the axes (apparently they can
shoot arrows through axes somehow...). After Odysseus does this he
signals Telemachus and the battle is on...

Book 22 starts and Telemachus must get to the armory and back before
Odysseus runs out of arrows. He does this, but in the process, he
leaves the armory door open and one of the suiters discovers where it
is. This gives the suiters a fighting chance but Odysseus, Telemuchas,
the cowherd, and the swineherd are just too skilled. Odysseus has his
disloyal servant women clean up the mess and afterward, he hangs them
all in his back yard.

21: i think its sweet what odysseus can do with an arrow. i guess this
is why he is the closest mortal to a god. i think we all knew that he
was going to be able to do it. i really want to see the suitors or a
picture of them. i see them to be fat and dumb. i got a little lost
when he started to reveal himself.

22: this is very non-heroic. no hero goes and kills these men just
because of what they have done. but at the same time i can see he
wasn't happy. It was a big brawl in this chapter. definitely one of my
favorite chapters!

in book 21, penelope has a contest among the suitors and the others i
guess to shoot an arrow through 12 axes. the winner gets to marry
penelope. all of the suitors tried and they failed miserably and
telemachus even fails. odysseus steps up to the plate and he does it
with ease.

in book 22, after odysseus wins the contest he shoots the arrow at one
of the suitors that was like the lead suitor. i think he was
eurymachus but im not sure. after that they gathered their weapons and
began to fight all of the suitors. the suitors got more weapons
because of an error on telemachus but they end up killing all of the
suitors in the end anyway.

In book 21 Penelope has a archery contest to see who she will marry.
The suitors took turns trying to shoot an arrow through the hole of 12
axes. To make the contest even more difficult they must use Odysseus's
bow which only he has the strength to string the bow. The suitors try
and fail but then Odysseus tries and completes the task with ease.
In book 22 the suitors were dumbfounded when Odysseus, still in
disguise, completes the challenge. Then Odysseus revels himself to the
suitors. Then Odysseus told the suitors that he would spare no one.
The suitors begged for their life then Odysseus kills one with a arrow
through the throat. Then the suitors realize that they have to fight
Odysseus and Odysseus and Telemachus along with 2 other men fight the
suitors and kill all but two priests.

In book 21 Penelope gets out Odysseus's bow to have the suitors shoot
through twelve lines of axes to see her her new husband would be. They
all failed. Odysseus tells Eumaeus and Philoetius that it is him. He
shows them the scar on his foot. Odysseus takes the bow from Eumaeus
and shoots it through the twelve axes. Why doesn't he just tell his
wife that it is him and get it over with?

In book 22 Odysseus reveals himself. Odysseus and his men kill a lot
of the suitors that are there. Eurycleia have the women take away the
corpes and was off the blood. Telemachus was told to kill them with a
sword, but instead he hangs them for a more painful death.

In book 21, Penelope puts the suitors to a archery contest to see who she will marry. They all had to use Odysseus's bow, string it, and shoot the arrow through the hole of 12 axes. The suitors failed then Odysseus tried and he succeeded. I wonder what the suitors look like?
In book 22, Odysseus kills all the suitors. I think that was a pretty brutal, but then again it was also in his opinion pretty necessary.

In this book the test begins and they all try to string his bow but
fail. they try waxing it and heating it but still they fail. When
Odysseus stands up and asks to try they mock him cause he is a beggar
and old. He gets his chance to try and strings his bow flawlessly and
sends an arrow straight through all 12 axes.

In book 22 Odysseus kills lots of the suitors with his bow and then
his son goes and gets the weapons and they slaughter all the suitors
except 2. Then Odysseus gets all the women who were whores to the
suitors and makes them clean the house and then hangs them.

In book 21 its all about the archery contest. Odysseus, who is
disguised, is the only one that can do it. The suitors just wanted to
drink in the hall rather than do the contest. That would be way hard
to shoot through the axe.
Book 22 was my favorite chapter. Right away Odyssues kills some guy
and then goes crazy killing the rest of the suitors with help from the
swineherd, cowherd, and talamachus.

In book 21 I don't understand why its so complicating for her to
figure out if she wants to be with Odysseus. She should have just had
to suitors leave but I guess that would be a little hard considering
she cheated on Odysseus.

In book 22 I don't understand how Odysseus could get so upset
considering the factor that even though she cheated on him, he had
also cheated on her. Although when he cheated on her it was against
his will when she had the choice to say no.

In book 22 Odysseus reveals his idenity to everyone. He first is smart

The stringing of the bow showed what no man could do but Odysseus
himself and he did in fact do this he made his attempt easy while all
others struggle to even string the bow. He then turned on all the
suitors after all their attempts and made them suffer for all they had
done to his house and to his wife. It was a great battle and in the
end all the suitors fell and he spared the life of a bard and another
so it showed his compasion here. Odysseus was ruthless in this chapter
and it was exciting to read about him fighting with his son.

I cant believe Penelope hasnt reconzied Odyssey yet. This book she
spends time trying to find a new husband but all the suitors fail. Of
course when Odyssey who is seen as a begger tries he succeeds.
Once he succeeds he starts killing the suitors with the help of
Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Phipetiuis. Athena is there but she doesnt
help the fight until towards the end. After all the suitors are dead,
they get rid of the dead bodies. That must have been so gross!

In book 21, Odysseus has faith in Eumaeus and Philocetius to keep his
scar on his foot a secret so that no one would know that he is still
alive. He promises to treat the slaves like his sons if they fight

arrow through the 12 axes.

Book 21: I don't understand why Penelope has the suitors have the bow

23: The battle begins... O shoots a suitor in the throat and then T

kill all of the suitors except 2 who later are killed. Odysseus makes
all the unloyal servent women clean up the mess and then he later

I think it's really hypocritical of O to blame the suitors for what
they have done to P when he is the one who left his wife, was gone for
20 years, and cheated on her numerous times with numerous women. And P
says she's just been waiting for him to come back and then when he
does get back she makes the suitors go through all these tests if she
really just wants to be with O?
