Tablet 1 talks about the historical people and deeds. it talks about
gilgamesh's passage through heroism, grief, and wisdom.
The other tablets talk about the start of the journey to kill humbaba

wilderness. Sets outs to find Utnapitim who survived he flood that
almost ended life on earth.

10
Siduri sees Gilgamesh and shuts doors to him. He explains his story.
She tells him only gods live forever. He sets off for Utnapistim they
make and boat and head out to sea. The poles break and he uses his
skin as a sail. An old man tells G; nothing lives forever, gods decide
a persons b-day and death day. death is our certain destiny, even if

In tablet 3 and 4, Shamah's importance becomes clear. Gilgamesh and
Enkidu not only seek their own names but they're doing doing gods work
to kill Humbaba. Lugulbanda's companions leave him for the dead on a
journey to Aratta. In this tables it sounds as though the search for
knowledge is important.
In Tablet 7, in this tablet legacy would be a good theme b/c he
doesn't want to die as a bad person. A god tells him love, glory, and
the pleasures of a cultivated life are important and being loved,
while alive and mourned when dead. Basically he is saying that the
recompense for losing life cherished is the life he cherished.

I: Gilgamesh built the city of Uruk. Giglamesh's mother is the goddess
with wisdom. I think that and intervention on the gods is when they
listen to the people of Uruk and tell Aruru, the god of creation, must
make someone strong enought to stand up to Gilgamesh. He thinks he is
so powerful and can do whatever he feels like dong no matter how bad
it is.
II: Enkidu finds out that there is a wedding in the city. It is not
gilgamesh's. Everyone says that Gilgamesh will be with the bride
before her husband is. Unkidu goes goes and guards the brides chamber.
Gilgamesh wrestles him down, and then all of a sudden they lose all
anger towards each other and become friends. Ninson gives her best
blessing towards them and Enkidu becomes her sons companion. Together
they go find their destiny in the Cedar Forest and go fight the
demon.

should stop his quest for immortality and he finds out that his life
is very good now and that he should cherish his mortal life and that
the richer life is in this world and the more you leave behind for

Books 3,4, and 5

Gilgamesh wants to attack Humbabas forest for their cedar trees. But
many are scared that Humbaba is too powerful and smart. Gilgamesh
tells his mother that he doesn't just want to steal the trees but kill
Humbaba himself. His mother asks Shamash to protect Gilgamesh and
adopts Enkidu as her son. They travel very far in a short matter of
time, stopping for very little until arriving to the forest and they
finally stop and think about what they are about to do. So they end up
sleeping a couple of times and everytime they sleep they both get bad
dreams during their sleep. They end up running inot Humbaba and
killing him, then taking the tallest tree for a suvinear. They end up
cutting down more trees to make a raft, and while floating back to
Uruk with Humbabas head on it.

himself to the wild bearing clothes of unscraped animal fur an d
searches for imortality and trying to find Utnapishtim. He journeys
through darkness as we all do at some point when we are searching
blindly looking everywhere and we try to reach our goal. in X he has
just arrived outside the cave to make his discovery and he finds it
but not in the way he thought he would. XI and XII he finds the answer
to his question is that its not life that it immortal its what you
leave behind that grows in power. Then it wast about parallels to

Gilgamesh: 3 & 4- Gilgamesh goes in front of his people of Uruk & says
he wants to invade Humbaba's forrest & cut down the cedar trees. The
elders think it's unwise & warn him of Humbaba's sense of invasion and
great warrior skills. They tell him to at least take Enkindu with him,
so Enkidu & Gilgamesh go and talk to G's mom. She is scared for them,
and prays to sun god to protect them. She adopts Enkidu as her son.
They embark on their journey, and walk 450 miles in 3 days. They stop
only to make offerings to the sun god by digging a well. Along the
way, they encourage and support each other.

Gilgamesh: 6- Ishtar, the goddess of love and war wants Gilgamesh
after he fights Humbaba. He rejects her, saying how she always ends up
humiliating her human lovers. She gets mad and convinces her father to
send the bull of the gods on him so she can watch it gore him. The
bull shakes the earth, and it swallows 100 men, 3 times. Then Enkidu
grabs him by the horns & wrestles him so Gilgamesh can stab him & they
take his heart out and offer it to the sun god. Ishtar and the temple
prostitutes mourn the death of the bull while Gilgamesh & Enkidu
celebrate their victory. Late that night, Enkidu wakes up and asks
Gilgamesh why the gods are having a meeting.

Gilgamesh: 7- Enkidu wakes from his nightmare of the gods meeting to
decide the fate of the two men. Ishtar's dad think they should punish
someone for cutting down the cedar tree & killing the bull. Enlil,
Humbaba's master and god of earth, wind, and air said Enkidu should
die. The sun god defends him they did what he told them to do.
Enkidu's dream comes true when he gets sick. Before dying, he curses
the hunter the first spotted them, the prostitute that lured him, and
says he wishes he never had been friends with Gilgamesh. The sun god
says that when he dies, Gilgamesh will wander the earth, undone by
grief. Enkindu finds comfort in that and takes back the curses.

I had the last three Tablets.
in VIII and IX it was saying that since Enkidu died, Gilgamesh is very
upset and is trying to seek out eternal life. This literature shows
the simple, natural life that the shepherds live in an idealized way,
and it shows descriptions of the dead's life, the mourners, and the
injustice of death, and the chance of life following death. Gilgamesh
starts changing into a beast like Enkidu. The anaylsis had said "When
one of them faltered the other was there to support him."
In X G meets 3 characters who give him advice to stop searching for
immortality. They remind him that death is going to happen and life is
all we have. One of them is even immortal and still tells him to stop
because he already has much gained knowledge of the value that life
has and G hasn't found that yet.
in XI and XII The anaylsis had said "even if the God's are capricious
and men must die, humankind, nonetheless is meant to live." Mostly
this was representing that everybody does die, but the humankind will
always live on. G realizes this and see that he's been wasting his
life trying to find internal life. Some people find the ending
pessemistic because it doesn't show anything about heaven, that
there's no internal life, and no redemption. But some find it
optimistic because it describes a optimistic way for humans to live
life. Another thing the anaylsis said that was good was the more that
humankind leave behind kids, their reputation, and friends, the easier
death will be.

In Tablet VII, Enkidu, Gilgamesh's companion, is chosen by the gods to
die for Gilgsmesh and Enkidu killing Humbaba. Enkidu wishes he had
stayed in the wilderness by decides otherwise after he is told he
would never have met Gilgamesh. Enkidu then dies.
In Tablets VIII and IX, Gilgamesh abandons the civilized world and
becomes like Enkidu when they first met. His grief changes him. He
goes to find Utnapishtim to become immortal. He convinces the
scorpions to go past them and he finds his way to a garden and becomes
revitilized.

Tablet 7 The gods decide that one of the companions must die. Enkidu
is told he will die, and out of anger
Enkidu curses the hunter and the prostitute. According to the
Mesopotamia's curses symbolize altering fate
not just figures of speech. Enlil accuses Shamash of acting more like
a human and not like a god.

Tablet 8&9
Gilgamesh is mourning over Enkidu's dead body, he stays with the body
until worms start crawling out of his nose.
There are orders of a gold statue to be made in remembrance of Enkidu.
Gilgamesh sets off to find Utnapitim, & on his
journey he must travel through a dark passage. When he goes to the
magical garden it symbolizes rebirth.

In book I Gilgamesh is so powerful that the gods had to create an
equal for him so they made Enkidu. Enkidu lived with the animals and
loses his innocence when he sleeps with the prostitute. Ishta, the
goddess of live fertility and war plays a huge role in Gilgamesh's and
Enkidu's lives thus creating intervention of the gods.

In book II The language describing the friendship between Gilgamesh
and Enkidu is referred to as erotic. They create a hero's companion
for each of them and seek fame together. Gilgamesh finds out about
Humbaba and refer to him as evil and consider them good and need to
destroy him. Once Gilgamesh meets Enkidu he starts to seek fame for
both himself and his city to make himself a legend.

In book III and IV They go to Gilgamesh's mom and she does some
spiritual offerings to the gods and adopts Enkidu as one of her own.
Then they seek out Humbaba and refer to him as evil once more and how
they are the good sent to destroy him.

Book V Gligamesh and Enkidu go on a journey of initiation. They leave
their mothers behind. Their quest is supported by Shamash. They
trespassed on their journey. Death is the fate of mortals. If they
believe to be immortal they are guilty of excessive pride.

Book VI Adonis dies and is resurrected. Gilgamesh is refusing his own
mythology.

Book VII Enkidu says he should have stayed with the animals because
the gods say that he must die.

In tablet 2 Enkidu becomes human by sleeping with the harlet, wearing
clothers, bathing, eating and drinking and other things like that. In
his tablet E and G fight and after they fight they become good
friends. They complete each other.

In tablets 3 and 4 it talks about how the elders of the city want G to
pray to the god Lugulbauda. He was left for dead and the god Shamash
helped him survive and become a god. This is important because G and E
are going to kill humbaba and they will be left for dead. The theme
is death and rebirth. Another important thing that happend was G told
E to touch his heart if he needed courage, later in the play G touches
Es heart and feels nothing because he is dead.

5: Gilgamesh and Enkidu describe the terrors of war but you never hear
about the actual combat. the message is that death and fear are
inescapeable but if you are a part of a community you can funtion.
6: Ishtar turns her lovers into animals. Enkidu and Gilgamesh
disrespect Ishtar which shows that they dont remember that they are
mortals.
7: the gods say that Enkidu must die. sun god tells Enkidu of values
that are important and being loved when alive and mourned when dead
are important.
10: Gilgamesh destroys the Urnu-Snakes and the Stone things but no one

Tablet 10- Gilgamesh meets siduri, tells her his story. She tells him
where Urshanabi's house is. He goes there and makes a boat to go to
Utnapishtim. While traveling G uses his animal skins as a sail. He
meets an old man and they old man tells him not to search for
immortality, death is our certain destiny, gods decide when people are
born and die.

Tablet 11&12- The old man is Utnapishtim and G listens to his story
about how he became immortal which is similar the story of Noah,
Utnapishtim was told by the god Ea that Enill was going to send a
flood to destroy humankind and Utna gets away by building a boat. In
XII Gilgamesh realizes what everyone was trying to tell him about
trying to elude death and is told that "the richer his life is in the
world, and the more a man leaves behind for his children, reputation,
and friends, the easier death will be," because no one can elude
death.

Tablets VIII & IX - Enkidu, Gilgamesh's good friend, dies and
Gilgamesh gets a little infuriated. He calms down and later decides
that he doesn't want to die himself, so he goes on a quest to find
immortality. In this quest, he hopes to find a man named Utnapishtim
(...wow that's a mouthful).

Tablet X - Gilgamesh finds Utnap after journeying through a dark
tunnel for 24 hours and across waters of death. Utnap tells him that
death is natural and that nothing is forever.

Tablet X1 - Gilgamesh questions Utnap on how he came to be immortal,
and Utnap goes on and tells Gilgamesh his story which is awfully
similar to the one described in the christian bible. After he's done,
he lets Gilgamesh clean up before he is to leave and return to his
kingdom.

Tablet XII - short addition to the epic of Gilgamesh that was appended
for unknown reasons. Basically Enkidu ventures to the underworld and
perishes there. The gods then allow his soul to return to talk to
Gilgamesh, and during their talk Enkidu says that the more sons you
have in this world, the better it'll be for you in the next.

life.

Tablet 6: Ishtar wants to marry Gilgamesh but he doesn't want to marry
her
because he has nothing to give her. She gets pissed off and tells her
father, God of Firmament,
to let her release the Bull of Heaven. Her father doesn't understand
why she is so upset, but he lets her
unleash the bull. The bull comes out and kills a lot of men by making
a big crack on the ground and the men fall in.
The third time the bull does this Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull
of Heaven.

Tablet 7: Enkidu has a dream that night about the gods being very
upset. Anu says that someone
must be punished for kill Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven, but only one
must die. Enilil, Humbaba's master and
God of wind, earth, and air, says to kill Enkidu. And then something
about Enkidu cursing a hunter and the prostitute.
Then the next morning Enkidu tells Gilgamesh about another dream where
he is alone in the dark plain and sees a man with lion's
head and eagle's talons seized him, but then he was changed into a
bird like creature. Gilgamesh tells him that he would have been better
off
dying in battle. Those who die in battle are glorious. Now Enkidu has

I think that the First tablet really focuses on human sexuality.
Enkidu is taken from the forest by the harlot and she domesticates
him. And first Gilgamesh was the best man in the land and he loved
women a lot. and it was his idea to send the harlot up for Enkidu.
Then the gods make somone that is his equal so he will leave the town

I did tablet 1, 2, and 3.

in tablet 1 it talks about Gilgamesh's adventures and his experiences
with heroism. It speaks about grief and wisdom and historical deeds.

in tablet 2 it talks about the harlot setting out to domesticate and
acculturate Enkidu. She leads him to a Shepherd's camp. Endiku eats
cooked food and gets drunk which is just as big of a human experience
as making love and creating music. When he is finally human, he is
their adversary as he guards the camp from their attacks.

in tablet 3 it explains how important Shamash becomes.

one, which completes their spiritual journy. they steal cedar trees,
that belong to the gods and they turn them into monuments to honor

selves and the boundries that make up their spiritual world.
tablet 6: reveals great deal of mythological background. it talks
about the importance of ishtar and goddess of fertality. the goddesses
mortal lover dies for her and is resurrected in universal.
tablet 7: it says the gods have spoken, enkidu must die, first he
curses a hunter and prostitute, then it says something about how it

Ok so this story is about Gilgamesh and Enkidu. These guys are
soulmates and gay together. Gilgamesh is teaching Enkidu to become
human. I read in one of the analysis' that the story of Adam and
Eve's fall of innocence in the Bible kind of relates to the story of
Gilgamesh and Enkidu. The fertility, love and war goddess, Ishtar,
plays a huge role in this epic.

Explains that Gilgamesh is more god than mortal. He needs an equal to
control his power. Enkidu is his equal because he is like an animal.
Enkidu becomes more civilized while being with the prostitute.

II
Enkidu's prostitute gives him clothes and takes him to the shepherd's
camp to civilize him more. Gilgamesh and Enkidu are really good
friends, some versions show them as being more than friends. While
Enkidu becomes more civilized through the prostitute, he in turn
civilizes Gilgamesh more.

III & IV
The Shamash symbolizes light and wisdom while Humbaba is darkness and
evil. Gilgamesh and Enkidu are going to go kill the Humbaba in his
forest. Shamash hates Humbaba

Enkidu sleeps with her and loses himself. She then brings him back to

Tablet one talked about how Gilgamesh was king and how poorley he
treated the people he showed rule over. The other tablets of the book
told how Gilgamesh came to meet Enkidu and how they started the
journey to kill Humbaba, and what happened after Enkidu died. Also the
last major thing I noted from this book is that Gilgamesh wanted to
know more about death and immortality because he was trying to bring
