Discuss your thoughts on Beowulf. Is he truly a hero or merely a
braggart? How does hubris play into his character?
Support with specifics.

i believe that he is a hero. he does a lot of bragging but i think
he's got the guns to back it up. i think its takes a lot of courage to
set sail to somewhere where you have never been and try to defeat a
"demon."

i believe he is a hero that wants a lot of attention, but isn't that
what most hero's wants? he is very hubris by his powers and the
support he has from from the town people.

I think that he is a hero but he he also is very proud and thinks that
he can do anything. and the driving force behind what he does is to
bring attention to himself and not really for noble reasons or just to
be a good person. But also he can be arrogant because he can back it
up but someday it will come back to get him.

I believe that he is a hero because he thinks it is fate that him and
grendel will have their fight and he and some of the best warriors
just came over to an unknown place and fight this evil creature that
they know nothing about except what they have heard. He brags a lot at
first and he sounds great and all but i also think he has the courage
and strength to back it up. he is hubris because he has the will to
fight and also the support of the other warriors, the king and his
towns people.

i think he is a hero because he is very strong and and is backed up by
the people of the town. he does show off a lot and seems like he wants
a lot of attention, but doesn't every hero want that. he was really
brave when he set sail to an unknown place and that takes a lot of
guts and he also killed grendel finally, so he is a hero

I believe Beowulf is a very big bragger but is still a hero for what
he does. He still makes the trip and stands up to Grendel and fights
him for a place where he's never been before. He is very strong but he
takes the fame very well and likes when he is being praised with the
prizes. His Hubris was demonstrated by the power that he has and by
the people that support him and go with him to help him out in his
community. Beowulf is a hero who likes the fame.

He is truly a hero. He can back up all his talk with actions, which he
shows to everyone by killing Grendel with ease.
He also has much pride because he has never lost a battle until about
50 years after killing Grendel, but even then he lost with his head
held high. I don't think he purposely brags, though, because when
you're the best and you know you're the best you're allowed to
somewhat.

I think he is the hero because he is obviously the strongest and the
"cockiest". He knows he is one of the most powerfull thing out there
and that he can defeat anything that gets in his way. He aslo has a
lot of courage to pick a fight or conflict in someone else's
territory.

I think that Beowulf is a little bit of both. Because when Unfurth
said that he was not as good as he claimed he shot back the truth and
rubbed it in his face that no one else could have done what he ,
Beowulf , did while swimming in the sea. beowulf also proved his
strength by battleing and defeating grendel without any armour or
weapons and tore off his arm with his bear hands. Hubris isn't really
in his character untill the end of the poem when he battles the dragon
like he would have done when he was young when he was an old man and
he died after slaying the beast, but that pride in his stength is well
founded but he kinda throws it in everyones face that he can do these
things and they can't.

I believe that Beowulf is a hero but he is just very arrogant about
it. He has the strength to tear off Grendel's arm but then to show
that he did it he hangs it in the hall. Hubris definitely plays a big
role in his character.

Beowulf is a hero. He went to another country and killed Grendel and
his mother, which is something that he would not have done if he was
only doing this for fame. He risked his life and saved others which is
what a hero does. Hubris does have a role in his character, though,
because he insists on not using a weapon to fight Grendel, as his
pride won't let him.

I believe that Beowulf is truly a hero because he has the courage and
strength to defeat Grendel. He does brag a lot but I believe he is
expressing to the other that he is capable of defeating Grendel. He
has an extreme amount of pride in himself but it is okay because he
can back it up. He can do what he wants because he helped the people
of Herot by killing Grendel. He enjoys receiving praise from others
after doing what he was supposed to do.

I think he is a hero because he is strong and courageous. He brags a
lot and wants attention but is able to back it up with his strength
and when he kills Grendel. His hubris is shown by his power and the
people back him up. He was brave when he sailed across the sea to a
place to help a city with a demon they could not kill alone.

Fighting demons, killing Gendel and standing up for what he believes
in is definetely heroic. Beowulf is hubris becasue he is willing to
do anything to stand up for his towns people. He is kind of cocky and
tells them that he is the best around. One of the times Beowulf shows
hubris is when he tells the story of the swim he competed in. He
tells them that he killed 9 sea monsters and no one can match him in
his strenght and abilities. So he is a hero but everything is all
about himself.

I think Beowulf is more of a braggart. He likes lots of attention and
gifts and he likes to prove how strong he is. He does goo things for
people, but I think he just wants people to see what he can do.

Beowulf is both because it's impossible to be a hero without first
having hubris.

Beowulf is arrogant because he sailed to an unknown land seeking to
rid the population of Grendel. And Beowulf is a hero because he went
there and actually did it. You can't have one without the other.

I think he is arrogant with some of his actions and the way he fights

Grendel and the kind of traits he has. He is arrogant but he backs

and now is back at it tempted in kill grendles mom.

He can be a bit braggy at times but he can back up what he has to say
to everyone. He has support form everyone. Beowulf has to have more
courage than anyone to put his life in danger when he goes to fight
Grendel in that pond thingy.

I think Beowulf is a hero because he leads his people. He steps up and
fights monsters that nobody else would, and defeats a big problem that
was plauging his land. He shows hubris by thinking that he won't be
defeated, and he's the only one that could beat the monsters.

I think that he is a hero. I think this because he has the strength

is because he is really arrogant, but he is able to back that up in
his fights.

I think Beowulf is a some of both. He travels to a whole new country
just to save these people and kill Grindel.
But i think some of the reason he goes to kill Grindel is partly for
his pride and now he can say he killed a beast that
noone was able to. He does brag about his swim, and of course when he
kills Grindel & Grindel's mom but he has the uns
to back it up. I think hubris plays some in his character because you
really cant be a hero without hubris.

I think he is a Hero that likes to brag. He does lots of heroism and
shows lots of hero qualities but he likes to show it off. I think
that hubris is shown in Beowulf when he talks about his swim battle.
He starts bragging and telling crazy stories about how amazing he is
and how he killed 9 seamonsters in the process.

when he travels to unknown territory to defeat a demon.

I think he is a hero. He is very arrogant, like when he bragged about
his father, he bragged about killing other monsters, and he bragged
that he could kill Grendel. I still think he's a hero though, because
when he decides to go kill Grendel, I believe he didn't do it all for
himself. He did know that death could come to him, but it didn't
matter. Also, he comes back to kill Grendel's mom, even though he's
accomplished what he wanted, he does it to save the people. He has
many characteristics of Hubris because the pride he has comes off as
arrogant, but he actually does have the power to do what he brags
about.

In my opinion, I believe he is a hero, but he also boasts a lot. So I
believe he is both a hero and a braggart. He believes highly in what
he is doing so he naturally brags. Beowulf shows arrogance and favors
his own ability and importance. He gets wrapped up in all of that so
he ends up bragging as a result.
