In the Create VM Instance panel of the Google Cloud Console, if you select the Local SSD option, there's a the field for selecting a snapshot schedule is still selectable. This implies you can schedule snapshots for your instance's pool of local SSDs.

Does this work? Will snapshots be created of the local SSDs? (I assume, one snapshot per device in the set?)

If so, why is this functionality not exposed anywhere else, or documented? E.g. why can't I create a manual snapshot of an instance's local SSDs?

If not, why is the snapshot-schedule field enabled, and/or why don't the docs call it out as having no effect?

(I notice that if I choose a snapshot schedule for the local SSDs, and then go back and edit the created instance, it doesn't report the selected snapshot-schedule anywhere, let alone allow you to change it. So I'm leaning toward "the snapshot-schedule selector has no effect.")

Hello,

I have been checking your message and I can confirm that you are absolutely right. Thank you for pointing this issue.

Snapshots are not supported for Local SSDs and this option shouldn't be selectable or we should get a warning stating that this is not supported and won't be applied.

I opened a internal issue and published a Public Issue Tracker [1] where you can follow the correction process.

Hello,

The Cloud Console has been corrected and it will be no longer possible to select a snapshot schedule for Local SSDs
